As life begins to become normal, or whatever my new normal will be here on the island my intention is to shift this blog from a diary of events, as it's been in the past, to more notes on the cultural exchanges between the Phukers and the Farang "foreigner". Already in my first week I've experienced a lifetime of events. I've been to two unbelievable beaches, two new islands, bungee jumped, eaten things I wouldn't have even kicked into a gutter at home and witnessed a mugging, don't worry it wasn't me and no one was hurt and I'll get to it later. For the past week we've gotten a lot of "oh here comes the tourists" looks which I'm hoping will fade as Phukers realize we aren't going anywhere as our purchases have gone away ... read more

So its been almost a week since arriving in Bangkok. Orientation is coming to an end and we are all getting ready to head out to our respective schools to begin our adventures. This past week has been a blast, here are a few highlights to really sum it up: Our hotel is about a 45 minute taxi ride from city center Bangkok. The hotel itself seems semi decent upon arrival, although we quickly learn that we are going to have to get comfortable with bugs. I am assigned a room with a girl Katie. We created two signature moves, the cockroach crawl and the spider shake. The cockroach crawl is required when coming back to you room at night. You turn on the lights and then respectfully wait a second or two before entering the ... read more

After a hectic year of state side living, I've decided it's time for another adventure. This time though, a 2-week trip just wasn't going to cut it so I quit my job, moved out of my apartment, sold all of my belongings and headed to the airport with a one way ticket to Thailand where I have accepted a position as a Math Teacher on the Island of Phuket. My adventure begins at the departure terminal at Dulles Airport, where, upon arriving to the ticket counter I was told "there was no ticket under name." I told the man that there must be a mistake and he should check again, which he did and then said "oooooh JESSICA" and printed out my ticket. What he searched for before is beyond me.... The flights were relatively uninteresting, ... read more

If we had a grand total of 3 hours of sleep I’d be surprise. We zombie packed our suitcases then headed down to the lobby. We got to airport without issue but ended up caught in a hour delay from mechanical issues. Because of the time difference, the flight home only took 1 hour (13 hour flight, 12 hour time difference). The highlight of the flight home was passing over the polar ice caps. I took a casual 100 photos since I figured this was probably the only time I’d ever get to see them. We landed in NY and were surprise greeted by Abby’s brother Steve, who had apparently been waiting at the airport for 2 hours (poor guy). He took us to drop our stuff off at the hotel room and then asked us ... read more

Our last day full day had finally arrived, but we still had much to look forward to. Our first stop was a Jade Museum. Here we learned the history of Jade and more importantly how to tell fake Jade from real jade (the noise it makes when you hit two jade pieces together). We were then given time to walk around the store. Not very interested in buying Jade I took to looking at the intriquite carvings. A small Chinese woman found me and started following me around the store asking me questions. She started with the normal “Where are you from” to which I responded “United States”. She then asked me “What State?” a question I found oddly specific. I replied “Virginia”, which she then yelled “13 original colonies!!!!” This caught me off guard and ... read more

For our first full day in Beijing, we head off to the Summer Palace, where Chinese Emperors use to spend their summers. The Palace surrounded the Kunming Lake and offered amazing views of Chinese architecture. The Summer Palace is also home to the world’s longest corridor (apparently listed in the Gennis world record book, yet to be confirmed). After snapping more pics we boarded yet another boat to dragon island. We all managed to claim the forward portion of the boat (or so we thought) where Abby and I quickly acted the role of co-captains until the boat started and we realized we were going backwards. The boat ride took us to the other side of the lake where we were able to cross the “17 arch bridge” named for, you guessed it, having 17 arches. ... read more

Today we woke up and headed to Old Shanghai. Apparently this was where all the Chinese lived when Shanghai was occupied by Europeans. The Chinatown of Chinese Shanghai if you will. This area was pretty cool. Very ornate and filled with super Chinese things, as one would expect. Walking around we found a store selling these round moon cake things that were really cool looking. We figured we'd be adventurous and try them. Once we ordered we didn't get the delicious looking cakes out of the window but a tiny shrink-wrapped one from behind the counter. Figuring the experience would still be worth it, we both simultaneously bit into it and simultaneous declared THIS IS THE WOOOOOORST. We soon found a trashcan to dump it in, and continued on our walk about. After Old Shanghai we ... read more

After our very eventful night, we got up around 7 to walk around the lake. Word on the street was that a family of black swans (Natalie Portman?!?) had moved in and Abby and I were out to spot them. It was rainy and gross but we ventured out. We turned a corner and an angry Chinese woman started yelling at us...not knowing what to do we turned around and walked around the other direction. Almost immediately we found the swans and crept up near them to take some pics. Mission accomplished. We headed back in for breakfast, which surprise to no one, was pork filled. We managed to dodge most of it and grab some eggs, but I'm sure at some point pork was involved. Our first stop for the day was a Green Tea ... read more

Today we woke up early and headed to the Lingering Gardens, a traditional Chinese Garden. Here we were able to walk through the stone paths through bonzai, lotus lillies and Chinese opera performers. Although the gardens were absolutely beautiful, I think they highlight of the tour was the small group of random Asians that started following me around. A woman and her husband, about 60 years old asked to pose with me in front of the pond. A few minutes later, a group of high schoolers crept up behind me, when I turned around they all shrieked and then asked if I would take pictures with them. I guess I must have been the first (approachable?) white person they've seen...unless their was some inside joke I was missing. At least they didn't call me Lady Gaga ... read more

Because Abby is a marriott points millionaire, we got to start our day off in style by eating in the VIP club at the top of the hotel. This was pretty amazing as we could see the whole city. We met our tour group in the lobby and headed off to explore Shanghai. Diva squad showed up in 4 inch platform heels which they promptly traded in for sandals, a great disappointment to the rest of us. Our first stop was The Bund where we saw a wall street style bull (apparently a gift after the US single handedly took down the market, our bad), a flower wall (self explanatory) and the new skyline of Shanghai. We snapped some obligatory pics and I schemed on how I was going to steal a Chinese baby as they ... read more
