Hello Everyone! And so the 2013 travel begins. It all started, of course, in Kunming. An easy hop from KMG to Guangzhou and then a 12 hour flight to Paris CDG. I had a good seatmate on the flight. He was from Australia and on his way, ultimately, to Greece. Ate a fine meal with a glass of wine on the plane and made small talk with my new friend. He is an electrician from Perth. Nice guy. Anyway, a quick change in CDG and off to Manchester where I met dad and Leigh at the airport. After a light breakfast, we hopped on the train to St. Bees and, after about 28 hours of travel time, finally arrived in our guesthouse in St. Bees, England, UK. St. Bees is a really beautiful town on the ... read more

Hong Kong. One of those cities where just hearing the name immediately sparks feelings of wonder and curiousity. One of those places that we hear about when we are kids and are fascinated and (speaking for myself) want to see such a place for ourselves. Day 1 The day begins by touching down in Shenzhen International Airport at 1am. The airport is a bit out of town and the subways and buses had shut down for the night. Plenty of taxi drivers hawking rides and expensive hotels. I would have none of that. I found a comfy bench in the terminal and slept on and off for about 5 hours. The first subway started at 630am that morning and I had to be at the embassy in Hong Kong (hopefully) by opening hour, 9am. The subway ... read more

Hello all, To begin the blog (and not to sound arrogant but) I must say, I've been a lot of places and seen a lot of things. The Spring Festival in China (AKA Chinese New Year) can be summed up in one word: "impressive". There have been some fireworks going on all week, all in a buildup to the big show: the first day of Spring Festival. The evening has been particularly loud and bright. Some background: Spring Festival (Chun Jie) is the celebration of the lunar new year. East Asians, the Chinese in particular, celebrate with food, alcohol, and fireworks. Just imagine a non-patriotic 4th of July multiplied by 100. There are 100 times more people, equal amounts of food and drink (per capita), and 10,000 times more fireworks. Lucky for me, I am a ... read more

Day 1 Like any great trip, day 1 is always a day of preparation. This was to be a hiking only trip, so it made it slightly easier to prepare for. This time my inventory included: gas stove, pot and pan, tent, sleeping bag, pad, Gortex boots, clothing for all weather (hot, cold, sun, rain, snow), essential trekking gear (compass, headlamp, firestarter, etc.), Nook, iPod, and a lot of food items. I had instant noodles, canned tuna, peanuts, raisens, dried bananas, peanut butter, snickers bars, energy bars, tea and instant coffee, and moon cakes (for the Mid-Autumn Festival, people traditionally eat moon cake; delicious). SO, after stuffing everything in my backpack I headed off to the train station. I had an 8-hour sleeper train to Dali that night and slept pretty well. I got a bed ... read more

Hello Everyone! This will be my final blog entry for this trip. I finally arrived home on Saturday night around midnight. It had just rained right before my plane landed. I walked home from the bus station and everything was fresh and clean. Kunming's air really is quite good. It smells like a botanical garden sometimes (usually just at night when there are no cars on the roads). My apartment was as I had left it. It has been well looked after while I was gone. My Korean friends had their friends stay here for a couple of days, my French friend put other couch surfers up in here (one stayed for a week!), and my other Korean friend slept here for two weeks while the university dorms were being repaired. They kept it clean and ... read more

Asia » China » Xinjiang » Kashgar August 28th 2012

Kashgar was not the China I was expecting when I arrived there about a week ago. I was expecting the slick Urumqi that I had left nearly a month before. A multi-ethnic, have a beer at the delicious night market, clean, livable place. Kashgar, even by Chinese standards, is something completely different. While it still has the busy night markets with delicious food (although boiled goat heads are a questionable choice), there is certainly no beer to be found in this Muslim outpost in the far west of the country. I cannot call it clean either. Again, sitting on the western edge of China also means you sit on the western edge of the Taklamakan Desert. When the wind blows, so does the dust, dirt, and sand from the east. So what DO you see in ... read more

Alright! I will preface by saying I have officially safely arrived in China! Very exciting! Now the story: I arrived in Sary Tash two nights ago at approximately 11pm local time. My driver was able to find me a guesthouse with little problem for 200KGS for the night (another very good deal!) So far my 4200KGS 36 hour bus ride has cost 3800KGS and taken less than 5 hours. The guesthouse was VERY comfortable and the lady running the show was very friendly. It was not so much a guesthouse as just somebody's house with a spare bedroom. After a quick inspection of the room I saw a box that looked very familiar: a shoe box wrapped in Christmas paper in such a way that one could easily open the box without tearing the wrapping paper. ... read more

Hello everyone!! Thank you for all of the comments. I love reading them. I'm glad you are enjoying the blog. I think this should be one of my last entries. I will try to hustle back to Kunming from here on out while making just a few side trips here and there. Multi-day treks are finished as are border crossings. Things should become more and more familiar as I start to move southwest. So, from where I left off last time I was in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. I took a bus ride back to Bishkek and slept at my host's house again there (I felt my welcome was nearing an end, but its just one more night!) The following morning I woke up early expecting to purchase a bus ticket bound for Kashgar, China. This would be ... read more

Asia August 20th 2012

I woke up on Sunday morning at 4:30am to the sound of a prayer call. Today was a very special day for the Muslim world as it was the last day of Ramadan. Today was also the day of the Karakol Animal Market and you had better get there early! So, after sitting up in bed and enjoying the call to prayer I got up and headed out; camera in hand. "Which way to the market?" I thought to myself. Then I spotted a family of three with two calves walking down the street. "I bet THEY might know." I followed them, and every other piece of traffic in town, all the way to the market which kicks off at 5am. I followed the calf family, a guy with his flock of sheep, truck loads full ... read more

Well I arrived back in civilization again this afternoon with some new friends along. I begin at the beginning. I left Karakol town on Tuesday morning and headed up to the Jeti Oguz Sanitorium; the location of the first meeting between Boris Yeltzin and the first president of Kyrgyzstan. It has not been renovated since the meeting. Anyway, I was just in the area for lunch and it is a good launching point for a four day trek through the mountains. I found a good spot for lunch and ordered some noodles and one cold beer. There were no empty tables so I sat down with these two old kooks knocking back shots of vodka at 12 noon. When in Rome. Our conversation was without words and only gestures. I turned down offers to rent a ... read more
