Well here it is. Random thoughts and musings on my 6 month jaunt over to New Zealand and SE Asia. Everything seems to be going to plan (i.e. I don't really have much of one):

1. Luggage, far too much. Yes, sorted.
2. Visa's, no problem so far. Yes, a fews hours amongst all the mail order brides at the Thai Embassy. Sorted.
3. Pair height-gain hiking boots, I can now reach the ground sitting on the Motorbike I have hired in NZ. Check.
4. Vaccinations haven't made me ill, but many holes in my arms. Check.
5. List of really stupid activities to try in New Zealand. Check.
6. Do they have soft loo paper? Unknown - It is a worry.

OK so what is going on? This is obviously not right. What have I missed? "Looks round frantically". Oh yes - learn to relax, it's a holiday (sort of).

So just a little update.... Illness in Bangkok A week of feeling sorry for myself and coughing up nasty things from my lungs while not being able to take occasional sanctuary (read: air conditioning) in the big shopping malls in downtown/central Bangkok made for a low time. I had an interesting discussion with Amilie at Villa Cha Cha one night. She works for a Acrlyic sheet manufacturing company during the day (in import/export as her English is excellent) and then works in the restaurant/bar in the evening (8.30am to 11.00pm!). She did yawn once or twice! Asking me what I thought of Thailand, well I see the tourist Thailand it is hard to see or understand the Thailand she knows as home. We are insulated from much of the country and trying to understand the troubles ... read more

So here I am again, it's been a little while hasn't it? I've got my excuses lined up; heat (May is the hottest month of the year in Thailand - doh!) and illness. So what has been happening? Apart from new life forms growing in my lungs I have learnt to dive. Koh Samui So backtracking a bit, from Chiang Mai I took a flight down to Koh Samui, it was either that or a 20 hour bus ride and 6 hour catamaran journey and basically I'm to old for that. I paid the money (the advantage of being a bit older), so I didn't get the full experience but more on that later. So I arrived in Koh Samui and immediately felt the difference - this was an operation for tourists on their (notice the ... read more

Choo Choo! So after things finally opened up after the Songkram festival I was able to book a train up to Chiang Mai - an overnight sleeper. So on the train i briefly spoke to Sally who happened to come from Brisbane (but like all girls that come from that region a bit nuts! But she was obviously not charmed and went off to sleep fairly shortly). I had the top bunk and with the train rolling around like a ship at sea I didn't think I'd get any sleep or would fall out shortly. Surprisingly enough I did get some sleep and it was actually quite a pleasant way to travel. Of course it worked on Thai time so we were an hour and a half late. We complain in the UK about being five ... read more

Arrival So here I am in Bangkok, I landed at 9.00pm Sunday night and after a taxi ride at breakneck speed down to Banglamphu region (or Kho San Road area), 13 hour flight and 3 hours transit each side I was pretty knackered and planned to hit the hay. I'd booked the Sawasdee Welcome Inn but of course my Taxi had dropped me off at the Sawasdee Sunshine Inn. Balls. Fortunately it was only a short walk down the same Soi (lane). So the next day I decided to take it easy and wander around acclimatise myself and get the hang of everything, book a new guest house (as mine had all the walls falling down in the corridor!). Blimey it is hot and humid here and Bangkok hits you like a freight train. 'Hello where ... read more

So I've come to my final entry for New Zealand and possible the highlight of my time here. After a couple of days mooching in Christchurch I was picked up by the motorcycle hire guys. Jacket to large but who cares! I was off with a 300km ride down to Twizel. I had taken the inland, more scenic, route that ran along the edge Canterbury plain with the mountains to the west. The day was sunny, no cars around and... read more

Christchurch So I've been a bit delinquent with this recently, I was about to apologise to all concerned but as I’m out here for me to enjoy myself I have decided against that. You get them when you get them. So after a long bus ride from Queenstown I arrived in Christchurch (the most English of New Zealand’s cities),well a city consisting of 350,000 people so slightly larger than Watford! With road names such as Manchester Street Armagh Street and a signpost for St Albans I almost felt at home. I booked into the Chester Street Backpackers a small converted house with an old bus in the backyard that had two beds in it. I stayed here for two nights with Kat (a Dutch girl) and Connie (a German guy). This was a very small friendly ... read more

Heading So Queenstown is the self proclaimed adventure capital of the New Zealand. I stayed at Bumbles backpacker that has a stunning view across the lake. So here you can throw yourself off any structure you can think of (Bungy), Swing over a Canyon, Skydive, Rock climb, basically anything designed to scare the crap out of you. One thing I found out rather quickly Queenstown is designed to suck money out of you; it is world class at that. My first full day here revealed three important things; one the key to Bumbles included a 2 for 1 drink deal at the Buffalo bar (every night of the week)...sighs! Secondly I was knackered and decided my first day was going to consist of being a vegetable. Thirdly it is a small world. I stood gob smacked ... read more

The Routeburn Trek Jayne and Greg drove me down to the start of the Routeburn trek; this was a 2 day 2 night trek across the mountain in the Mount Aspiring National Park. I'm sure that I had packed as light as possible but 3 days food, sleeping bag, billy can..etc. all seemed to weigh far more than they should. The initial trek was through a forest of beech trees with a couple of swing bridges that really did swing. This was the flattest and easiest part of the walk so naturally I tripped and fell about 30 minutes after the photo was taken. My new watch tried to separate my hand from my wrist! A bit of gaffer tape to repair the hole in my rucksack and off I went again. At the Routeburn Flats ... read more

Nelson to Westport Down to Westport and a jetboat ride on the Buller river, a river that rises reguarly upto 8 metres and its flood level record is 16 metres - it passes the same volume of water as the amazon in the winter! A little jetboating ride with Eric (reminded me of the guy from Home Improvement - everything needed more power, 2xV8 with 820hp, yadda, yadda, yadda....!). His aim seemed to be to get us as wet as possible in our Ali G get ups!. Westport itself - pizza, beer and a doubles pool in the evening. Myself and Darren (England) versus Jos & A.N.other (Holland), 1-3 beers you get better, 4+ beers you get worse. Sorry 0-1 Holland. Well doen Jos. Grrr...Other than that don't bother with Westport. Hi again all, Stardate....3. This hop-on hop off bus ticket is not very hop-on hop-off! Far to frantic. If I knew what I know now I would not have bought the damn thing, oh well making mistakes is all part of this travelling lark. A little observation I usually have to think a moment or two before I know what day it is. The lack of structure compared to a regular 9-5 existence means I waste so much time but I'm getting used to it! The more hippy orientated travelers (the ones you smell round the corner) trying to grow dreadlocks call this chillin' (yes no 'g'). I call it catching up with my sleep after being woken up at 3-4am when random dorm mates get back drunk as a skunk. There is no use denying ... read more
