As our group ventured into the Amazon, we traveled deeper by canoe. Not your ordinary canoe, it was a 30 foot solid wood canoe with a 75 horse powered engine on the back. As we traveled farther and farther up river, it became apparent that this was the most popular form of transportation for these people. Many things happened during this day: remote animal protection and restoration organization in the deep jungle, demonstrations from indigenous Amazonian traditions. All of which had one thing in common, they were only accessible by canoe on the river. Regardless of the extent of the development, it was on done by the water. I think the one thing that struck me the hardest was watching these three girls walk back on the path to their home holding their white shoes, barefoot.
