Wonderful!! Great to hear from you - I have been wondering how you have been faring. Sounds like a great experience so far. Dad and I experienced the food cooked underground in New Zealand (the Maoris) and I have also eaten zeabra. So enjoy the Alpaca and (yuk) guinea pig. Love you.

Hello from Riverdale What a great blog, who does most of the writing? We are having the worst summer so be lucky that you guess are having heat and sunshine! Life goes on here, work is busy and I am so looking forward to vacation time and seeing you home safe and sound. Your Dad has offered the cottage for a couple of days which is fantastic. Willard St. is off to New York city for four days so I am home alone, except for Lucky and Angel. This single life is proving to be very interesting. Italian Hobos or Gypsies Maybe?? What's with all the sleeping in parks and train stations? Have you girls become hobos or perhaps you've taken after the Romas and become wandering Gypsies?? Okay, I know I told you not to call if you needed money but if you are really Down and Out in Paris and London (a book you should read by the way...it's by George Orwell), I would rather break my piggy bank than see you sleeping in dirty pigeon-infested parks and being scorned and mocked by Italian matrons.

hello lucky travellers So lucky that you are meeting these people to put you up at night..I love the description of you both falling asleep on the park bench..what an adventure. The food, scenery and people you are meeting is all quite amazing for you but I am starting to miss you quite a bit. The first month in a half went so fast as I am sure the second half will as well. So glad that you are both having such a fab time and it is great to hear your voice on the phone. You sound so mature, the seasoned traveler. I love love love you and happy travels.

Someone told me that Gaudi is the origin of the word ‘gaudy”. But apparently, that isn’t true.

There are two schools of thought on this word, in addition to one erroneous explanation. First, it is thought that gaudy comes from a color term from Middle English, gaudy-green, which itself originated because the plant which produced the dye was once known as weld, and weld, when borrowed into Old French, became gaude - hence English gaudy-green. It is said that gaudy soon lost its specific color connotations and came to refer to anything 'bright.'
The second explanation is that the term comes from English gaud 'joke, plaything.' That word was adapted from Old French gaudir 'rejoice,' a descendant of Latin gaudere 'delight in' (from which English gets joy). The word gaudy still serves as a noun in English which means "rejoicing, joy, merrymaking; a festival", though it has probably gained obsolete status these days.
The erroneous explanation is that the term comes from the name of the Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926), whose architecture some believe today is gaudy. This suggestion can be discounted by virtue of the fact that gaudy dates back to the 16th century.
