It’s decided! Whenever you arrive after dark somewhere new, the best gift you can give yourself is a pre-hired car to take you to your destination. Kevin, Sonia, Kim and myself arrived to find a greeter holding a sign with our name on it. We promptly transferred all responsibility in getting to our apartment from us to him. We all got in our very spacious Mercedes van and headed off. The driver had a little difficulty finding our place on a very small street that we went up and down 3 times on. Though this was not his fault, it was just hard to see. Our place was great, the newlyweds were there, ready for us to crash their honeymoon after 2 days alone, and had already stocked up on beer, wine and nibbles (really, what ... read more

Sonia and I came to Sarajevo in 2001 with Maja and were very excited to come back! All I wanted to do was find the good cevapi place. And of course make sure the boys got to see the sights. We had a great couple of days in Sarajevo. We stayed in the Old Town and walked everywhere easily. We ate cevapi, stopped for coffee, and had dinner with Maja's cousin Ines one night in a fabulous restaurant what seems like only the locals (and friends of the Palekas) know of. It was great fun! It was also our 1st wedding anniversary there and Shane was not feeling well that night so couldn't come out to dinner, which was a bit of a bummer. But considering we remained healthy all summer long, we can't really complain! ... read more

Ok, we know that some of you think we're still in Dubrovnik celebrating Maja & Steve's wedding...it's for you that we're finishing our blog. We'll be honest and tell you the final blogs were all written last summer, we just never uploaded all the photos and hit the 'publish' button. We're very sorry. New life in Canada got in the way. For almost a year. No excuse, however, and we understand if out of protest you refuse to read the rest of the blogs. Admittedly, part of us still wishes we were stuck in Dubrovnik with everyone. Anywhoo, let's pretend it's last August... We packed up Saturday night and left bright and early on Sunday morning for the Dubrovnik bus station. A rushed breakkie across the street and on the bus we were with Sonia and ... read more

Our first and major problem with this blog is that we don't have any photos as we were both in the wedding party and didn't have our camera. It will have to suffice for now with some pics from Maja and Steve's camera. Or you can go on Facebook and look up everyone else's photos of Maja and Steve! Best ones so far are Jason's: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=319081&id=805930611 The day was absolutely amazing. And it was bloody hot. The next day had a lovely breeze, but M&S's wedding day was crazy hot. Maja never complained once, it was very impressive. The girls woke up early and got started on the day. Maja headed to her "mani-pedi" (as Son likes to call it) and the rest of us brought the stuff with us to the hotel, where we would ... read more

We arrive in Dubrovnik on a stinking hot day. Our only job is to find a man named Viktor around the firestation. He is the man to lead us to our villa in the hills. This proves a most interesting task with many Croatian men being approached with, "VIKTOR?" After 15 minutes contact is finally made and we are on way into the hills, 96 steps up to be exact. Thank goodness there was a pool and cold beer waiting for us at the top. The house was Marina/Aldo, Steve/Maja, Son/Kevin, Us. We had a home cooked meal that night...one thing that we will never take for granted again. We were in Dubrovnik for 5 nights, Tuesday to Sunday, with the wedding on the Friday (to be blogged about seperately). Much of this week was spent ... read more

It all went according to plan, it was quite amazing. Although they're were some dicey moments getting to Zadar. We met Son & Kevin when they arrived at Heathrow (I love airport arrivals) and we hung out with Odin for a while. We had a relaxing lunch in the airport waiting for our flight to Zadar. We first flew to Zagreb, which was delayed, and we would have missed our flight to Zadar had that flight not been delayed as well. We arrived rather late in Zadar but with the best meet and greet: Maja, her sister Marina and her Mom, Amira. Too fun! The best part, however, was our mode of transportation for the next 4 days: the people-carrier. Yes, Marina's poor duty for the next few days was to be the bus driver for ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow from Copenhagen to a lovely scene: Odin waiting for us at the Sofitel! As we had little time between arriving in London and heading out the next day to Croatia we booked a hotel room at T5 and invited Odin along for a sleepover. What a fun night and morning we had with him! We laughed, we caught up on life and we did many silly things (as is normal when one spends time with Odin). We had a few issues with the hotel this time around: couldn't get the internet working, a slight breakfast fiasco that Shane sorted out...boy, I love a man who gets so frustrated with service he won't take no for an answer! But no matter what the issues, we had a fabulous night with Odin and are ... read more

This is our trip to Copenhagen in a nutshell. It was brililant. We arrived from a day of travelling from Santorini quite tired and decided to have a nice meal in our airport hotel and then head out early the next morning into town. Slightly reminiscent of Budapest, we had had no time to do research before arriving in Denmark. We had no clue of exchange rates and I went to find out, only discovering the next day I had messed it up (turns out they convert not to 1 Kroner, but to 100). So our first meal in Copenhagen in our hotel was lovely and it cost as much as a stay in the hotel itself. Good thing we discovered hot dogs the next day. We tried to remember the last time we had a ... read more

This 2-day stopover Santorini was booked as it was the only way we could get to Athens that worked with our flight to Copenhagen. We had fun again in Santorini and agree with everyone else that it is a beautiful island. We realized that the first time we were here earlier this summer we got caught in what we call the "cruise loop": the boat people (as Mom likes to call them) wander around in a tight circle looking at different shops. You may recall we tried to find a souvlaki stand last time and ended up having a fabulous meal at Nouassa Restaurant. This time we walked around ALL of Fira and found a million souvlaki stands! But we still went back to Nouassa for lunch our first day and had the best lunch of ... read more

I am a beach. The individual grains of sand are not unique and do not have a voice of their own. Do not mistake me, I am happy to have them, as I am happy to have the stones, sea life and trees. They all listen intently to my words, but without a voice, all they offer in return is a living burqua to cover my nakedness. The wind tonight is acting like an amourous man, desperately trying to blow my cover away for a glimpe of my naked being. I am wise to the wind, but must admit I do entice him occassionaly to cool me in the heat or to bring wave after wave to wash me when I have been soiled upon by a disprespectful dog or drunken human. Tonight the wind has ... read more
