Poignant Having travelled through 16 Provences of China, I read your blog with interest. I must say your experience of security checks at Tienanmen Square is disturbing. That is a recent development. A mate and I were removed from it one snow covered midnight but that was because we were at the end in front of the Great Hall of the People where security can be a bit touchy. Certainly a poignant moment in your trip.
Tiananmen Yes it was beginning to get a bit frustrating - in fact when we tried to go to the mausoleum within the square they wouldn't let us in with our bags, but there was nowhere to leave them. This was after all the security checks just to get into the square! So in the end we gave up and didn't go into the mausoleum, which was a bit of a shame!
Jinshanling Very impressive that you had the foresight to visit a section of the Great Wall that is a fair way from Beijing and found you were virtually the only ones there. We did that back on Christmas Day 2007...just my family and four Chinese on miles and miles of sensational wall. As I recall they had to open it for us as it was so off the track at that time of year. Just think if you went to Badaling you would have part of a swarm (why we have never been to Badaling either)..Great atmospheric shot by the way.
Pingyao I have stayed within view of this pic in the middle of winter...the cobbled streets icy & slippery. What a contrast to this colourful vibrant summer shot. I have posted this in the 'Streetscapes' thread. Great pic.
Mountain Road, Mianshan I have posted this in TB's 'Follow that Road' thread in the Photography Forum. Check it out. Surely this road makes the Death Road in Bolivia like a cakewalk.
Mianshan Mountain, Jinzhong I have been to all the places in your blog except Mianshan Mountain in Shanxi Provence. So I've looked how to get there and it is SW of Taiyuan so one could fly in and access it from there. Your pics blow me away. How come I did not have this on my list when I travelled through Shanxi? Reason - there are so many treasures in China, it is hard to pick which ones to see! Definitely on my wish list for next time. Stunning is an understatement.
Wow!! What an amazing tour of Japan... I was wondering whether you had planned this trip yourself until I got to the end and saw that after four months in Japan, you actually could plan such a trip. I hope to replicate such a visit someday.
Destination experiences I am impressed with your adventures in Malawi. You did a tremendous 'voyages of discovery!' In a few words, If I may ask, what would you say are the destination brand experiences of Lake Malawi?
Thanks - I would say that Malawi has something for everyone. Hiking in the mountains, relaxing on the beach, fantastic snorkelling and kayaking, and some amazing accommodation. But my favourite thing about Malawi was the people - such warmth and friendliness - and for me that was what made it such a special place to travel.
Cardiff on a saturday night Ah the black waters of Lake Bunyonyi. So terrific. I eondered what lurked below the surface. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I loved Uganda, even crazy Kampala. Wished I had gone out to islands. A must to return and go to Bwendi and the savannah so, both very cool.
Rwanda is the emerald jewel of Africa I was there in 2014 on the 20th anniversary of the massacre. A little more somber, but I was happily surprised by a younger generation full of hope and pride. Evident in the cleanliness and care for their country. I hope it continues. I splurged for the gorilla permit, no regrets. I figured it was a good way to give back to their emerging prosperity. Loved the lake in Uganda, enjoy!
Greece is still my favorite country I've traveled a bit of the world and still love every thing about Greece. You have to love a country that has olives on the breakfast bar. We recently bought an Eastern Europe travel guide. Your blog is very timely. Great stuff. This part of the world holds a great deal of interest for us. Keep these fantastic blogs coming.
OMG--what a fab blog! So many amazing sites--great Greece--where its democracy was really only for the free white men (nothing for women and slaves); my beloved Meteora where I stayed for three weeks, hiking trails and visiting monasteries; amazing Albania that so few visit with its ecumenical mosques allowing others to pray there, painted Communist blogs and Enver to Never; fabulous Kotor and Zagreb--all so full of beauty and history. Pretty amazing what you covered in 2 weeks--what will you do with your lifetime?
After finishing a 4 year degree in Civil Engineering, I decided I needed a break from looking at buildings, roads and bridges and so headed to South Korea to teach ESL to a bunch of 3 year olds for a year. I enjoyed it so much I decided to continue the adventure in Vietnam, and I lived in Saigon teaching Maths and Science to lower secondary school kids for 6 months. I then went off exploring and spent some time travelling through Asia before heading to the Middle East and making my way back to England through the Balkans and Europe. The next 5 years has been spent furthering my career in Civil... full info
