When we woke up on the morning of the 17th we had fully recovered from the horror that was the water puppet show. I know Adam made light of the experience, but it was truly a painful, never-ending 30 minutes of mind melt. We are convinced that the water puppet shows are a cruel joke played on tourists by the Vietnamese people...they seem so nice on the outside, but really they are just laughing at us...that explains all the smiles. Anyway, it was a new day and we were excited to explore another part of the city. Friday's plan was a guided tour of Perfume Pagoda, which began with a 2 hour car ride at 8:30am. Adam would like to take this opportunity to revisit his previous comments on the driving here in Vietnam. He had ... read more

When we last met our intrepid travelers, they were just concluding 2 hours of kayaking and swimming in Ha Long Bay. It really was a lot of fun, but Danielle pointed out that we should have kayaked somewhere before coming here because "when we get back and kayak on the Potomac now, we'll just think: this scenery sucks. Let's go back to Vietnam." After kayaking and swimming we rested for a couple hours and then were called to dinner. This meal had even more courses than the lunch. I lost count but it was at least 7. The highlight here was fried spring rolls stuffed with pork, rice noodles, and spring onions. They were attached to toothpicks that were speared into a pineapple that was hollowed out and had candles all over it. I forgot to ... read more

Adam here. We arrived in Hanoi three days ago after a short 2 hour plane ride on Vietnam Airlines. The flight was a little bumpy and the airplane was a bit old, but it wasn't the worst flight we've been on. The airport in Hanoi is quite far from the center of the city - it took us over 45 minutes to get to our hotel which provided us ample time to admire the grace and beauty of the traffic patterns in Vietnam. Driving in Vietnam is something special; I've never seen anything quite like it. There are lanes and traffic lights, but the lanes have no meaning whatsoever and the motorbikes ignore the traffic lights completely. This wouldn't be so bad except that motorbikes outnumber cars by about 50:1, so you have just hundreds of ... read more

So on Saturday, we had been in Ho Chi Minh city for three days and decided it was time to visit a local nonprofit. So at about 2pm, we headed out to the Centre Medical International to avail ourselves of their medical services. Danielle had just had another bad bout of ... whatever she has ... so she figured we better see a doctor. The experience was actually very positive - Danielle got good medical care from a doctor who spoke limited English (in addition to Vietnamese and French) and diagnosed her with an infection of some kind. Fun! He prescribed some antibiotics, an electrolyte tablet, and some anti-nausea medication that is administered in such a way that you ... uh ... cannot throw it up. Including the visit with the doctor, which was 30+ minutes ... read more

Well, we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City two nights ago (Thursday, September 9th). We were supposed to get in around 10:00pm, but thanks to very delayed flights we arrived at our hotel around 1am. So after a very long day of travel we crashed into our beds (thank g-d the hotel had A/C in the rooms!). To my fathers disappointment I'm sure, we slept the next day (Friday) until 12:00pm. I would have normally made an effort to rise and shine early, but after the previous travel day, and the fact that I hadnt been able to keep food down for 24 hrs, I decided to cut us a break. Plus I thought that I could maybe sleep off the sick feeling...oooh was I wrong. Once we finally emerged from our room and hit the ... read more

So we weren't going to start this blog until we hit Vietnam soil, but since the adventures started here at home already we figured it would be unfair to leave you out of all the fun. For those of you that know us well you will not be surprised to hear that, after running last minute errands, Adam and I arrived at home to BEGIN packing at 8:00pm this evening. This normally wouldn't be a problem, except we leave for Vietnam for two weeks tomorrow morning and we are being picked up at 7:15am (by our dear, dear amazing friend Krista). And of course its not just packing that has to get done, its some last minute cleaning as well. But all in all, nothing too strange, just a normal procrastination night at the Rosen-Scruggs house. ... read more
