Sadly my trip to Daintree has been rescheduled to tomorrow - no worries! So its allowed me to chill and discover more of Port Douglas. Well I say discover but really there are four things you can do here: 1. Chill by the pool 2. Chill on the Beach 3. Chill on a boat and see the barrier reef 4. Chill in a cafe So today I have done 1,2 and 4 after successfully doing 3 a few days ago. Its bloody hot today 35 and rising and the humidity is about 85% so its like being in a turkish bath. Rose early today and had a nice brekkie of fruit and juice at Ozt Cafe before heading to Four Mile Beach and walking about 3 miles along the beach to MacCrossan Street (the main street ... read more

After a quick snooze to gain my energy for the rest of the day (by the poolside naturally) it was time to see the sight that is Port Douglas Sunday Market. Well my avid readers, imagine (for those of you that have been) Camden Lock Market on a Saturday being picked up, scaled down and transported to sunnier climbs et voila! you have the Port Douglas Sunday Market with a tropical twist. No there's no Lilt man, but you can get authentic Aboriginal Art Works, to trinket jewellery, sugar cane sodas (absolutely sickly sweet and vile) to absolutely delicious Mossman Pineapple and Mango - which yes I did succumb to purchasing and devouring (and very good it is too). People travel miles to this market, and I'm not really sure why - maybe I missed something ... read more

The alarm goes - 3.45AM and its time to get ready for my dawn balloon ride. The pickup arrives at 4.15am for an hour and half's drive into the Atherton Tablelands where the bush meets the rainforest. My birthday present from Mark and Sharon is about to be unwrapped!! I board the transfer bus where another 10 sleepy eyed travellers bid good morning, before heading back to their slumber. The ride, due to its darkness is pretty uneventful, but we are clearly going up and over the rainforest. We are heading to a take off site just outside Mareeba for a 30 minute ride in one of the worlds largest balloons. Excitement is welling up inside of me, this is something I have wanted to do for a very, very longtime and each time nature (the ... read more

After a dinner of steak and salad, followed by a good sleep its time for my first excursion onboard Sailaway IV to the Lower Islands and the reef. Now as many as you know my hatrid of swimming in the sea and those things called fish may question you as to why the hell was I doing the trip - well dear readers that is simple, I wanted to see the reef and I hadn't travelled all this way not to do it. In true Schofey fashion however, this was a not a join the tourists and ship out with 150 others. Oh no, this was a party of 20 on a catamaran for an hours sail to the lower isles, where the Quicksilver Mega tourarama would join us later. Greeted by the crew at 0815 ... read more

So with my time up in Sydney it was time to head due North East, some 1200 miles with Qantas. God this airline is good, smiley faces and a no worries attitude - I get to check in in good time amd ask for an emergency exit... all gone sadly, but with a twinkle in her eye the check in agent asks me to wait a moment. And so I do. 5 minutes later, she returns, "Seat 4J Mr Schofield - enjoy your flight" - yes Schofield does it again and gets an upgrade to business. The flight is delayed, but no worries I spend some time in the very nice Qantas lounge and get talking to some Americans who are also heading to Cairns. Turns out that this is the busiest weekend for the Airport ... read more

Well avid readers of the blog, I only felt it fair to reflect on the first week's trip of Rob The Poms Aus-O-Rama - I cant believe that I have only been in the country 5 nights, it feels much longer and that to me is a good thing. The Aussie way of life is really something quite hard to beat. Sure they work hard, and that is evident as you walk around the capital and watch the Sydneyers around Circular Quay rushing off the ferries to their work place but what you also note is the work life balance - something the majority of us I am sure would pine for. There really is no early to work late to finish mentality here, and it almost seems frowned upon if you do. The motivation is ... read more

What's that Skippy? Schofey's stuck on a fun bus with some smelly french people, some respectable yanks and a far out Aussie? Are you sure skip? Where's the bl***y well in all of this skip? Well dear avid readers thats how day 7 of Bobby's Ausorama began... just after 0740 as I stand outside the Marriott seeing all the plush four wheel drive tour buses head off in a screech, and a puff of smoke, so Herbie the four wheel drive tour bus arrives.... and my heart sinks. Out jumps John the tour guide of the day - a 52 year old Aussie Biologist who is just soooooooooooooooo relaxed man, with the john lennon glass on, I half expect Yoko to be in the back of the bus - but instead seats that have seen better ... read more

Have you visited Luna Park yet? Was the cry from the bell staff at the hotel - (no I hadn't it looked cheap, tacky and worse than Brighton Pier) I was urged to take the 5 minute ferry ride to go see it. So begrudgingly i did. This place is a museum piece, and if you are a Sydneyer you either love it or hate it. Its been closed down and re-opened 5 times and I can understand why. As you step off the ferry you are greeted by a smiling 20ft sunshine, that at night lights up. You enter through its mouth and are immediately transported back to the 60's and very reminiscent of Southport Pleasure Park that I went to when I was 5. Here both excited kids and adults run around with rip ... read more

For some odd reason I awake early today, refreshed and look out of the window to watch dawn rise above the Sydney Opera House - not a cloud in the sky which bodes well for my visit to the Hunter Valley - carefully arranged by one of our key wine suppliers. 0715 am and Paul greets me in the lobby and we have a quick spot of breakfast before heading over and picking up the car for the 2.5 hour journy to Cessnock and the heart of the Hunter Valley. Upon leaving Sydney and onto Highway 1 (nothing like the M1) we enter into a lush green landscape reminiscent of the New Forest, but Aussie style - there are inlets and coves, bright blue skies with the odd white cloud and we talk about the day ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Bondi Beach September 30th 2008

So BridgeClimb completed it was time to take one of Sydney's more natural sights and the famous Bondi Beach. Hopping aboard the Bondi Express Bus I was transported through the city and suburbs and also back in time. What began to struck me was just how stuck in the seventies Sydney is. Sure it likes to give off a modern vibe in the tourist areas but as you head out of it so you head back - ok not to the prehistoric era but everything just slows down - the pace of life, the speed of talking and the emergence of surfer dude. Within half an hour I've arrived at Bondi - and around me scantily clad surfer dudes and dudesses walk proudly along the boardwalk and show off their surfing prowess on the waves and ... read more
