So far, I have one confirmed meet up with a red panda keeper at the Philadelphia Zoo and I am hoping to hear back from the Bronx and Staten Island Zoos this week. Two weeks from now, my project will officially begin. I will have two and a half days in NYC to visit four zoos and then one day in Philadelphia to visit the fifth. 5 out of 54 doesn't sound like much, but I have to start somewhere! I am hoping to be able to meet with keepers at each zoo to ask a few questions for my research, but know that it may not always be possible. If the keepers are unavailable to meet on the days I am there, I will send my questions via email and compile responses upon my return home. 54 Zoos in the United States currently have one or more red pandas in their collections. It is my goal to visit them all. Looking at the map, I can only assume it will take me a number of years to accomplish this, but I am not discouraged. If anything, it energizes me to see how this amazing animal is loved by so many people around the world!... read more
