Lake Titicaca Leaving La Paz behind us, we thoroughly expected the bus to Copacabana to be late, being pleasantly surprised when it arrived on time and was uneventful, due to no chickens on board, working air conditioning and actual leg room! It was only 3 ½ hours to Copacabana so it went by in a flash, with a short boat journey half way through. On the bus we met two Danish girls, Sarah and Katja whom we quickly became friends with, and we ended up travelling together for a few weeks. We booked into a hostel, 6 de Agosto which was insanely cheap, and arranged to visit Isle de Sol on Lake Titicaca for the following day. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, the boat over to the island took 2 hours and ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz November 4th 2011

La Paz After all the faffing around sorting out the replacement passport, (previously stolen) for which I had to get a photo taken, bearing in mind I had just been on a 4 day tour with no shower, a 10 hour bus ride with no air conditioning and then a robbery... it was not the most flattering photo, things started to perk up a bit. We visited the famous witches market, which was....interesting! It contained all the usual jewelery, llama jumpers etc, until we turned a corner to be faced with dozens of dead baby llamas hanging everywhere. It turns out that you can buy a llama foetus to bury under the foundations of a house for good luck... I didn't see anyone buy one, we stuck to the llama jumpers. That night at the ... read more

Tupiza : : After crossing the border into Bolivia, (seemingly correctly) we got a train to Tupiza lasting about 3 hours. On the train they played the film Spartacus which seemed like an odd choice as it was only early afternoon, with a full train of travellers, and lots of families with small children, and Spartacus is very bloody and....... racy, shall we say! Anyway, ignoring that, the views from the window were awesome, as the train powered through a dessert with lovely mountains in the distance. Arriving in Tupiza we luckily met some staff from the hotel we were staying at, yes a hotel not a hostel!!! We got shown to our rooms and there were single beds... not bunk beds! It was incredible, the first time we hadn't stayed in bunk beds for ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta April 25th 2011

Igaucu Getting to Igaucu from Rio took 22 hours on the coach, but we were used to long haul journeys by now, so it wasn't too bad! Unfortuneately we didn't have time to see the Brazilian side of the falls and make it back to the border crossing, as we were told the border closed at 7pm, so we crossed straight through to Argentina with no problems and headed straight to our hostel. It was huge and more like a hotel to be honest, it even had a swimming pool, which we were impressed with, it seemed like luxery to us compared to some of the places that we had been in previously!! At the hostel we bumped into one of the girls that was with us during carnaval, so we all shared a bottle ... read more

Carnaval Well we had a week in Copacabana for carnaval and it was absolutely amazing! We met some amazing people and had the most incredible time even though it rained for most of the week, it did not stop us from partying just as hard! We arrived at our hostel in Copacabana at about 8pm and whilst checking in we straight away got asked by a bunch of people to head out with them! Most of the people staying there were English speaking, being mainly English with a scattering of Americans and Australians so communication was not a problem! So we dumped our bags and headed straight out to Lapa, which we were told is great for a night out! In Lapa we visited the famous tiled steps, and they were quite hidden away, at ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro February 25th 2011

So we finally arrived in Rio de Janeiro after a 2 hour dely at Manchester and a 9 hour wait in Heathrow! We were able to keep ourselves entertained though, at arriving at terminal 5 in Heathrow we heard music and decided to investigate, all the airline staff were doing kareoke and fundraising for red nose day and we were quickly asked to sing. We were a bit dubious as there were a lot of people around but we thought, why not! we had a long wait ahead of us! So we got up and sang infront of the whole of terminal 5, (not a small terminal) and we chose Barry Manilow Copacabana which seemed apropriate! This was a deciding factor that on our trip we were going to start as we meant to go on, ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England February 15th 2011

so the time has finally arrived, the jazzy trio (aka me, Lisa and Hannah) are finally leaving! I'm quite sure a lot of people may actually be quite relieved as I know I have been doing ridiculous countdowns for far too long now! Think I may have turned into one of those people that people are saying "are you still here?" about! I apologise for that To say that I am going to miss everyone is an understatement, shed a few tears already and the airport later on today (about 6 hours away!) is going to be horrific! But saying that, I know that this next year and a bit is going to be incredible, full of its share of ups and downs, lets hope a lot more ups though. Packing has proven to be a ... read more

Not long to go now (only 40 days to be exact) until we set off. Still need to do some serious organising and packing and then were off for over a year! Me and two other girls have finally got the get up and go and sorted ourselves out for the trip, and I think I can safely say that we're all more than ready to leave cold England behind us and get going with the trip and meet some interesting people and see some pretty awsome things along the way. Excited is not even the word!... read more
