Our first flight on the journey home is from Chiang Mai to Seoul, Korea. This flight was about 4 hours long overnight, and I did not get any sleep on this flight. Then, we had a 4 hour layover, which all of us took naps on the floor and seats in the airport because we were so tired. My exhaustion really hit then. Our next flight is from Seoul to Dulles, which is about 13 hours long. I only slept a little while on this flight, so I watched lots of movies and worked on my blogs and writing assignments for this cultural course. Before I knew it, we landed back in the US. Boy does it feel good to be home! At the same time, I do miss my buddies in Thailand. 3 Things I ... read more

Today is our last official day in Thailand. Our flight leaves at 11:15pm tonight, so we are going to head to the airport at 8pm. Today we completed a program evaluation with the BCNC staff. We all gave such positive feedback because this trip was truly the best planned trip. After the evaluation, we headed to a small community in Chiang Mai to help junior BCNC nursing students with a home visit. When we got there, the students were busy cleaning the entire home and getting ready to bathe two of the three bed ridden residents in the house. It was heartbreaking to see the situation in the house: an 81 year old man was caring for three bed ridden residents, two of his sons and his wife. His sons both have cerebral palsy and his ... read more

Well, today is my last full day in Thailand. I cannot believe that we have come to this point in the trip! It’s unbelievable how fast time flies by! Today we spent our last moments at the nearby lake soaking in the sunny 80 degree weather! I really enjoyed these last days in Thailand as they were so relaxing. In the evening, we had a farewell party for all of BCNC faculty and staff, our Thai buddies, and the nursing staff from Nakornping Hospital. It was a wonderful dinner at the beautiful Green Lake Resort. I enjoyed this time spent with my buddies. We exchanged gifts with practically every faculty and staff member as well as my Thai buddies. I had to go back to the apartment afterwards and find room in my suitcase for all ... read more

This morning we had a nursing conference about domestic violence, where four different nursing colleges attended and students presented on the topic. Carly, Sarah and I presented from Messiah College. Overall, I learned a lot about domestic violence in Thailand and the nursing actions and resources related to domestic violence cases. This really showed me how important screening and prevention is with domestic violence. The nurse has numerous roles when dealing with this issue, including giving resources to the survivors and assisting in any way possible. The presentations all went very well and were extremely informational! After the nursing conference in the morning, the 9 of us Messiah girls went to a nearby lake for the afternoon. We laid on the dock and tanned for the majority of the afternoon and it felt so nice to ... read more

This morning I experienced an hour and a half of a traditional Thai massage. It was an amazing experience and I would do it again in a heart beat. The massage costed about $8 USD, which is so cheap compared to massages in the US! Thai massage is different than massages in the US because they really focus on pressure points and stretching in addition to massage. The massage felt like it was 20 minutes long because I was so relaxed and enjoyed it so much. I couldn’t believe an hour and a half already went by! It was so worth the $8 USD spent. In the afternoon, we toured Bangkok Private Hospital. This is a health care system that has numerous hospitals throughout all of Thailand and including some hospitals in the neighboring country, Cambodia. ... read more

Today was easily the best day of this entire trip! We visited the Maetaman Elephant Camp all day. To start off the day, we watched the elephants perform a show for us. They did numerous tricks and activities, including painting pictures with their trunks! It was so creative and fascinating to see the elephants do these cool tricks. After this, we were able to interact with the elephants. I got to sit on an elephant’s knee, hug an elephant and sit on their trunks! It was very cool, and I got so many cool pictures to share. After the performance, we rode on the elephants’ backs. I was paired with Maggie, which was comforting! I enjoyed this experience as we rode through the water and up the mountain road. Walking through the water was the coolest ... read more

This morning around 10 am, we started a Thai cooking class for our lunch. We cooked various Thai foods like green and red curry, pad thai, papaya salad, butterfly pea juice, and a sweet dessert with water chestnuts. It was really cool to have our Thai buddies show us all how to cook traditional Thai food. We ate the food for lunch and it was pretty good! I really enjoyed the butterfly pea juice, which is basically a purple iced tea made from blue flowers. After the cooking class, we drove to another hot spring resort for a couple hours. It smelled like rotten eggs from all the sulfur and the water was extremely hot in some places! A couple friends and I decided to get Thai massages on our feet for 30 minutes and it ... read more

Today was my last day on the labor and delivery unit. I really enjoyed my experience here with the amazing nursing staff and patient population. Although I did not see a delivery today, Maggie saw a c-section delivery of premature twins and I was able to see the twins after the delivery. The unit got busy toward the end of our time there today, mostly because of a foot-link breech scare with another set of premature twins. Being in labor and delivery for this week has taught me a lot. First, I determined that labor and delivery is not my true calling. I still feel the excitement of the unit, but I don’t feel at home with labor and delivery. Second, I determined that neonatal or infant care is my calling. I got to see premature ... read more

Today was just a half day at the hospital, so we were really only there from 8:30-11am. It was kind of nice to have a half day today because the full days previously tired me out! Today was again a wonderful experience. Right when I got to the unit, a nursing instructor from BCNC pulled Maggie and I to observe in the NICU for the morning, which has been my desire since I came to Thailand! I really wanted to shadow in the NICU just to compare care here in Thailand with the US. Maggie and I were thrilled to go to the NICU for a couple hours. The nurses were again so welcoming and were really willing to teach us about each patient. We saw the very sick infants, preterm infants, and more stable infants ... read more

Today on the unit, Carly, Maggie and I asked our instructor from BCNC if we could be more involved with the care of the mother and newborn before and after delivery. The instructor was very pleased to allow us to contribute more to the care. I was able to participate with newborn care once the baby was born. For example, I gave two medications to the newborn: Vitamin K injection and Erythromycin Ointment over the eyes. I was thrilled to have this experience because my passion lies in newborn and infant care. We observed and witnessed a couple of births throughout the day, so we felt busy and occupied for the whole day. One thing that is very different here in Thailand than in the US is that the nurses deliver non-complicated births. Also, nursing students ... read more
