Randall Boessenecker

Hey my name is Randy Boessenecker, and I'm a 22 year old senior at UC San Diego. I am double majoring in archaeology and history, with a possible minor in literature or art history. I am extremely interested in ancient history and travel, both of which have inspired me to go on several study abroad programs while at UCSD. The UC study abroad programs are awesome, and extremely well organized, so it has been a really wonderful experience to travel to and learn about new places that I've wanted to visit since childhood. My passion for travel and history, combined with my being a pretty social person, have made these experiences of a lifetime, and I plan on continuing to travel as often as possible to new and exciting places. I am starting this blog as a record of my travels (including some not through the UC study abroad programs), so that I can share them with family and friends, and as a visual reminder to myself of the amazing experiences I've been blessed with!

Europe » United Kingdom October 19th 2010

During my sophomore year at UCSD I hung around in our school's International House a lot, and got to know many of the students there really well, both Americans and foreign students studying in California. I became really close with them, and learning about their experiences abroad made me want to stud abroad even more than I had before. I'd wanted to study in London since middle school, and after I met some British friends who studied in London, I found out about the different schools and decided to apply to King's College. I applied in October of 2009, and had to directly enroll at the school because there were no OAP or EAP programs doing spring semester only. I wanted to do spring semester in case I wanted to take another semester abroad (thus doing ... read more

Africa » Egypt September 4th 2009

This was a trip I took in September of 2009 to Egypt, again through UCSD's archaeology department, and again led by Professor Braswell. While on the trip to the Mayan lowlands, I found out that Mr. Braswell does a trip to different archaeological areas every september, due to UCSD's beginning school later than semester schools. Usually they are to different Mayan, Olmec and Aztec sites in Central America, where his area of expertise lies. However, on our trip he informed us that the next year would be to Egypt, a trip he does less often. I was extremely excited about this trip because I'd wanted to go to Egypt my entire life, and I'm assuming my application came off as a pretty desperate sounding. Anyways I got accepted, along with about 5 other students who'd applied ... read more

North America September 4th 2008

This was a UCSD study abroad trip that I took in September of 2008. I found out about it through the anthropology/archaeology department, and applied freshman year and got accepted. It was my first trip abroad that I'd taken without my parents and I was extremely excited about the opportunity. The trip was led by Geoffrey Braswell, one of UCSD's archaeology professors, and there were about 20 other students along with myself on the trip. We started out in Merida, on the Yucatan Peninsula, and drove through the peninsula in two vans to different archaeological sites, then crossed into Belize and Guatemala to see the pyramids there. Highlights included the ruins of Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Piedras Negras, Yaxha, Tikal, Palenque, Calakmul, Seibal, Copan, Tonina, Caracol, and Yaxchilan. ... read more
