Much Better! Sounds so much better than your experience at Cancun. Having the Mayan sites to yourselves can be a magical experience. We were lucky to be the first ones in to Tikal, Palenque and Copan Ruinas. Walking amongst the ruins by ourselves as the sun peaked over the horizon is one of the memories that will always remind us of the wonder of travel. So glad you guys had a good experience in the Yucatan and we look forward to hearing of your future adventures!
Tough Stay... I have to agree with you about Cancun. But even though I don't care for it either, you sound like you had an exceptionally tough stay! I have to say that while this part of the coast is over touristed, we really did enjoy the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula immensely. Merida is historic and has a great Centro. Chichen Itza is nice but not as good as Uxmal. We love Campeche on the northern coast. Progresso is a nice and the cenotes are all the coolest and most unique thing ever. Visiting the flamingoes near Progresso was one of the best things we did in our year and a half in Mexico. Too bad about your hotel stay, but I think sometimes the worst things make the best stories and we really enjoyed yours. Congratulations on persevering under some tough situations!
Re: Tough Stay Thanks for your comment Nancic. Cancun was tough but we got out to Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza for a few days and had an amazing time. Blogs to follow...
Cancun Didn't quite live up to the hype...a bit on the nose you say. That's when it's great to have hired your own wheels. You can say "Let's get outta here"...and drive into the glorious sunset.
Blackpool in the tropics :) We are heading to this part of the world soon, and I'm now glad that we changed our travel plans which initially had us landing in Cancun. Although, that meal at Labna sounds fabulous!
Re: Blackpool in the tropics Hi RENanDREW, thanks for your comment. It sounds like you've had a narrow escape. what I would say though is that we had an amazing time at the Mayan ruins in Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza... There are places in the area worth seeing but Cancun really isn't. Happy travels!
Good call Good call going to Cuba now. I went last year and the place got its hooks into me - going back again this year, hopefully it won't have changed too much. I had no problems with my cameras, even when I took a larger lens out for a walk. (The steel memorials in the Plaza are Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos)
Re: Good Call Hi Jo, thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, we thought it was a good call too and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Havana... We were just sad not to have time to see more of Cuba. We had no problems with our cameras either, in fact the lead picture with the man and the dog was a guy who gestured for me to take his picture. Hope you enjoy your next trip there. I think you'll find little has changed, there are still no American brands but there is now a US embassy on the Malecón, not far from Hotel Nacional.
wonderful! Hi, great to see your photos regarding getting to Cuba. I have a loooong wish to go there but still couldn't make it happen. Hope will do it someday! However, its interesting to read about it. Wishes...
Keep dreaming! Hi Arif. Thanks for your comment. We had such a good time in Cuba and I'd highly recommend it... Keep your dreams of going there alive. I'll be publishing my next blog probably sometime next week with pictures from our time in Havana. All the best, R
Missing in Action If One Ear makes his way to Auckland, I'll let you know. Come on, this is the age of social media - someone must have seen him out there. If you get something going let me know and I'll help spread the word :-)
Thanks! Hi Jo, thanks for your comment. I have great news... We found ourselves back in Queenstown and had some time to retrace our steps... We found him bruised and battered lying next to a lake where we had camped. We were very happy!
Funny account of venturing into the wilds of Oz As an American, when you hear about the kangaroos of Australia, you think of them as you might think of the of seeing a wild fox or puma. But, they are more like the squirrels we see here- practically everywhere. We saw them along the roads, in the parks and even in the meat section of the grocery stores (wrapped, of course).
Re: Funny Account... Thanks Neil, I really appreciated your comment. We were surprised at how ubiquitous the kangaroos were too. We enjoyed photographing them but also enjoyed finding them in the supermarket. Looking forward to seeing some of the wild animals in North America in a couple of months time.
Greetings fellow travellers, welcome to my blog. I really look forward to connecting to other like-minded adventurers to be inspired for my own adventures. My wife, Lindsey, and I have embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. We are planning to visit South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, much of SE Asia and as much of South America as possible.
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog... I hope you enjoy it. Please do get in touch if so.... full info
