Japan, a land filled with millennia of history, enlightened culture, and delicious squishy snacks. To many of you, I’ve introduced the Japanese treat of daifuku (aka: booby snacks) and, mostly based on texture, people seem to love them or hate them. However, I’ve discovered that they’re only the tip of the gelatinous, squishy iceberg. It seems that Japan has an extreme fondness for all things doughy and jelly-like, whether they be sweet or not. Without being a part of the culture, I really can’t explain its popularity but suffice it to say that wherever you look in this food-centric country you’re bound to find something that wiggles unnaturally, whether it be in a soup, tempura style, a sweet snack, or simply by itself with sauce.
