Raigad was Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaja's Capital, the hill fort where he was crowned in 1674 AD. This fort is 210 KM away from Mumbai and 27 KM north from Mahad. Shivaji selected this as capital because it is startegically situated on an irregular wedge-shaped mass rock, detached from the main body of Sahyadri Mountains by a deep valley and inaccessible from three sides. The Fort is approximately 5.12 sq. km hill-top plateau and only one way to reach there. Travellers can reach up to Chit Darwaja, about 2 km away from Pachad by their vehicle. To go to the fort, you have to go through "Chit Darwaja". From there you have to go by walk which is very interesting for the tourists.
