Family/Friends: This travel blog will be updated as time and wireless internet access allows. We will post many of our favorite photos first and then return to provide a narrative of our journey. We look forward to sharing our stories, as our trip has been phenomenally memorable already...and we're only 4 days into it! Cheers to all! The Sala's P.s. It is likely that some of the information we may reference in this blog will be found on the site linked below. Arrival into the City of Hue - It was evening and we were greeted with exceptional service by the service staff of our hotel called, Villa Hue. It is actually a training hotel for tourism in Vietnam. However, you would not recognize it as a training hotel. The hotel was highly recommended by others and by our tour company. The hotel is of 4-5 star rating. Martyn would be a little jealous if he were to see the beauty and experience the service of this place. The following morning we set out for a partial day tour of several historical sites, including tombs from previous emperors and the famous Thien Mu Pagoda, the symbolic icon of Hue placed on a hillside along the Perfume river. Hue is the old imperial city of Vietnam. It was also ... read more

I will have to make my travel blogs shorter. The computers here are very slow and I do not have enough time to do my journal entries . . . Feel free to double click the pictures for a larger view . . . After Halong Bay - The next morning we drove 2.5 hours south of Hanoi for our scheduled 2 day bicycling tour in the areas known as Ninh Binh and Tam Coc. This area resembles Halong Bay, but without the sea. The region is full of large limestone rocks surrounded by verdant rice fields. This part of the tour provided us with the opportunity to get off of the tourist trail and into some rural areas of Vietnam. Our first day, we bicycled 3 hours into the town where our hotel was located. ... read more

April 4th and 5th . . . Upon arrival into Hanoi at 5 am after our overnight train, we were greeted by darkness and light rain. Everyone in the train berth still sleeps. I peer out through the mottled window looking for signs of life. Hanoi is not only awake, but an outdoor market that covers several blocks is already bustling with commerce. The train slows. We had yet to see any existence of blue sky while in Hanoi. This is not necessarily a bad thing since the cloud cover minimized any excessive heat and humidity. We have had minimal rain throughout our time in Hanoi - the weather has been in our favor for venturing off in this big city. That same morning, after breakfast, we headed off to the Northeast coast of Vietnam - ... read more

We began our third day of trekking following the same path we took into the village of Sin Chai. The morning weather greeted us with the persistent dense fog. The trail was wet and muddy from the evening rains. We were thankful to once again trek out of the dense fog as we descended down and across the valley. We trekked for over 2 hours, almost all downhill, before arriving to our starting point the day before. The more challenging portion of the trek began with crossing a bridge that spanned across a river. This portion of the trek involved ascending and traversing the valley that would lead us to our final destination in the village of Ban Ho. The trail was single track with unstable footing as result of the mud. A portion of the ... read more

By the time we completed our first day trek around the Sapa region, we were all exhausted. As a reminder, we slept on an overnight train the night before and got little sleep. We were hoping by morning the thick mist enveloping the entire region, occluding the supposedly spectacular views, would have lifted and we would have been greeted by a blue morning sky displaying the valleys and mountains surrounding us. The town of Sapa reminds me of the largest town in the Himalayas in Nepal called Namche Bazaar - the last largest town along the Everest Base Camp trail. The town is full of cafes, hotels and markets galore. Of course, the town has blossomed because of tourism, but it is obvious that we are foreigners visiting the lives of the mountainous villages in Vietnam. ... read more

Sapa - This entry will have to be quick (short on time) . . . Our overnight train was interesting - 4 beds per berth. Myself, Kober, Martyn and our guide, Khan, all shared a berth. Mom and Dad shared one with another friendly couple whom were from England. The mattress was actually comfortable. The noise of the train and movement of the train easily disturbed all of our sleep (except for Kober). The train ride was from 9 Pm until 5-6 am. Upon arrival into the town of Lao cai, our driver was ready to take us on our 45 min. ride into the mountainous region of Sapa. On a humorous note, prior to leaving we had to go to the bathroom. As I waited for the restroom to become available, a woman approached Kober ... read more
