love your narrative and pictures You are so brave to embrace such an adventure, I envy you. I love the narrative of what you're seeing and the people you encounter. This part of the country is different from SoCal, but so very friendly. Stay safe!
Love the pictures and the updates! It has been so fun to follow along on your journey! The pictures are beautiful (and funny!) Love your observations! Good luck with the dogs! You are probably the highlight of their day! : )
small town America with big hearts Wow that rain, thunder and lightning! - oh my!!!
So glad you had a happy ending with your family contacting WWAG and the Mayor and Sherry to greet you with open hearts. And a blessing of the church facilities to get you back on track. Ride on dear Bob!
Wow! Adventure-packed as usual! Really cool to see how willing/happy everyone is to help you out! The pictures on the porch made me laugh - I imagine the people will appreciate the thank you note :) Glad you were able to make it out of the horrible thunderstorms, and enjoy your well-deserved hotel tonight! Siblings are the best :) Love you dad!
We live in a beautiful world You get to experience what most people don’t! This beautiful Earth CLOSE-UP and the understanding that there are a lot of good people in this world! Lucky you!
Rain Hi Bob, We normally get less than 4" of rain in May at the lake. We are almost at 10" with 2 days to go. Other parts of VA are at 12 to 14" or more. You just picked the wrong year.
Wrong year! It is amazing that the only dry days were with Bruce! He must have been my lucky charm!
I’m still enjoying the experience though. It will make for good stories some day.
Thanks again for the hospitality.
Bob
Finally caught up! Fascinating reading, Bob! Great pix too! Great to know you are staying positive with all the rain and endless climbing. Nice to have a beer or two at the end of the day, I betcha! Thanks for keeping us informed. jk
Happy Memorial Day! Wishing the very best on your journey. Thanks for your service to our country. Thinking about you today. We remember the many places we have been on Memorial Day. There was the time in Indiana when we were camped near a Veteran's cemetery. Every grave had a flag on it. Very picturesque. Then there were the parades in the small Midwest towns. No wonder Trump carried that area. You can feel the sense of history and also the resentment at the major cities with their contempt for the "irredeemables" or "clingers" as Obama referred to that 50% of the country. Truck on!
Gearing Great blog Bob! Try saying that 3 times in a row. Having a 34 is good in the back. What size chainrings are you running? Also, did you consider camping under the canopy or wasn't that an option?
I remember Mt Rogers from my tour 35 years ago - beautiful area! I also remember the logging trucks (not to mention coal trucks in Kentucky, and more logging trucks in Oregon!)...Be safe, and have an amazing ride!
I am a retired Airline Pilot and have crossed the United States at 33,000 feet for over 30 years. Now that I am retired, I felt it was time to cross it by bicycle. In September of 2015 I rode from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico with four friends, so this will be my second bicycle adventure. Although I spent 20 years in the Navy, eight active and twelve as a reserve, my experience was far different than those who have served in the last twenty five years. I plan to ride this trip in honor of all who have given so much to serve their country. ... full info

Can't you turn on the radar and vector around the thunderstorms? Great pictures by the way! Ski
