One Room Schoolhouse I began my schooling in a 1 Room schoolhouse outside of Eaton Rapids MI where all grades K-12 were in the same room! There were 3 kids in my grade, and one of them is still my good friend today! My teacher used to sip whiskey from her tin coffee cup in the afternoons! I guess they were on to her and closed the school down in 1960, and we were bussed 10 miles away into a small town school! Fun to remember back to those days, walking a mile to school with my older sister...
hi Hi Bob
I'm following you and enjoying your ride. I never knew there was the Trans Am Bike Ride or race. It's great to see America from the roads less traveled. I just played in a 2 day ladies golf tourney at Big Canyon CC. We didn't take home any crystal but did win some $$. It was a beautiful event and great tee prizes. I'm getting sample T/T golf balls sent to me shortly. Keep cruising! Terry
Lots of Mennonites here I saw lots of Mennonite Churches coming in to town. The curator of the Historical Society was also one. She said there are a lot of them around Newton. The early ones came from Ukraine. They are much like Amish but not as strict.
Hang in there Wow, what a miserable day! I feel for you man and I am missing the action....not sure about Kansas though. I am working on a rejoin 7-30-8-12 flying out of Medford, Or on 8-13. Lots of moving parts including skipping Prineville and riding to Medford in order to fly back on 8-13. Lodging is problematic in some locations, as you know and just joined warm showers to research. Following the current schedule as written with July 30 fly in to Missoula. I will continue to research the lodging with dates as listed unless changes are in order, so please advise. Hope tomorrow is better for you!!
Hello again from your Illinois cousin Hi Bob!
Just wanted to check in again. It is so great to follow your ride. It is sooooo much better to click on your updates in the morning than the news! : ) The pictures are awesome!!!!! You are finding beauty at every mile! During my last drive across Kansas (many years ago) my friend and I had to pull over because a tumble weed got stuck to the front of our car, so watch out! : )
With Love, your cousin Heidi
Et tu Brute? The winds are so bad here at Lake Myvatn that I am taking my first bus for about a 100 miles today. Iceland is not for beginners or rational people on bicycles.
Hey Bob! Loving the blogs and follow all your adventures. I too was curious about your daily routine so I particularly enjoyed this one. Kansas has the reputation of being flat but it sounds like it has wind to make up for it!
Hi Steve Great to hear from you! I think about you and the RV gang often. I can’t wait to be back at the beach drinking an IPA. I have almost quit drinking beer because it is so hard to find a good one. I know when I get to Colorado that will change for the better.
Route 66 Very cool Bob. Making memories that will stay with you forever. Indeed those little things put a bend in the road. Pedal On Amigo. You’re doing great. Thanks for sharing...
Fantastic Trip, Fantastic Blog Your having a great trip, even with Bruce. Excellent blog. You are getting into my old turf. Grew up in Joplin, Mo from 9 to 27 before moving to SD. Worked on various bridges on Route 66, that you might cross, in my Civil Engineering days with the Missouri Highway Department and got part of my education at Kansas State University in Pittsburg, KS. Say hello to the girls for me.
A couple of yokels! Hey, been forced to sleep with any farmer’s daughters? Wives? I mean how exciting can this trip be? Fried pork loin? I can almost hear your arteries slamming shut from here in San Diego! I’m so jealous of your trip but I have RAGBRAI coming up to ease my jealousy. Keep pedaling!
I am a retired Airline Pilot and have crossed the United States at 33,000 feet for over 30 years. Now that I am retired, I felt it was time to cross it by bicycle. In September of 2015 I rode from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico with four friends, so this will be my second bicycle adventure. Although I spent 20 years in the Navy, eight active and twelve as a reserve, my experience was far different than those who have served in the last twenty five years. I plan to ride this trip in honor of all who have given so much to serve their country. ... full info
