Note from Phil 3.4.12... I've had a lot of fun so far. It's not all that different from California truth be told. The weather is the same, I mean, even some of the people look the same. But it's kind of of difficult trying to understand them. When they speak how they normally speak, it's impossible for me to keep up, but I can tell when they are speaking to me because they slow down. But this is a lot better then a spanish class, though those did help a lot. But they didn't teach a lot of words that are useful, at least in my classes, like on and off. They taught other stuff that is still helpful though and is helping me get along. I haven't started school yet though, I start tomorrow. I'm nervous, mostly because my family has been telling me that I'm famous here because it is a small town. ANd I have to wear a uniform. But oh well, I'll put the picture on Facebook sometime soon. My family is really awesome though. They've done all they can to make me feel at home, and happy, which I have. They have a TON of land here. 3 Campos( its kind of like a farm, though doesn't necessarily have crops) I've been to all 3 since I've been here, and they are just so beautiful. It reminds me of my childhood because this is like where I grew up. They have 3 dogs and they all love me :D, and they had 3 llamas, but one died abuot 2 months ago, and the other we found dead on the way to grandmothers house, who lives on the other side of they´re farm. The house is huge also, with a tree in the staircase. A real tree, though it´s dead. They have maids and I don´t really have to do anything, itç´s really odd. I feel like I´m at a restaraunt when I eat breakfast or anything. speaking of food, I´m going to get fat here, because they eat so much so often, and its all so delicious. It´s like american food too, barbeques, steak, eggs, etc. but they eat a lot of bread also. With every meal, and I love me my bread. Right now I'm at another house because my host parents went to a wedding in Santiago, the capital, and I couldn't stay there. But this new one is really nice, and today is my last day, I was here for the weekend. The people everywhere are happy and even if you butcher they're language they are still really nice because they know you are at least trying. I went to the mall yesterday, and I forgot how to pronounce how much does this cost, and the lady politely just told me how to say it, and then told me. But it´s different because one american dollar is around 500 pesos, and so everything seems extremely expensive. But only because they use such big numbers. You can get a bag of chips in my town for around a quarter, and in some places for 1.50. and they also switch the use of commas and periods in numbers. a number like 1,000,000.00 would be 1.000.000,00. Its a little change but you get used to it.
I'll be following your adventures! Hi Phil. Truly exciting to see you take a trip like this. I look forward to reading your posts and seeing any photos as well. I can imagine that "the parents" are feeling pretty sentimental to have their baby out of the nest. Makes me smile to think about your family. I love you all. Aunt Debbie
