Touring Through France The Tour de France is currently winding its way through France. This is an appropriate metaphor for us today. We left Spain behind and crossed into France early in the morning. Like the Tour, we are winding through France in stages. The first stage brought us to Biarritz. This coastal town in the south of France is mostly famous as a retreat for the rich and famous. So why are we here, you wonder? Well, we are just passing through. The bus stopped just long enough for us to walk on the beach and grab a drink. It’s a lovely area, but very expensive. Gas was selling for 1.67 euro per liter. Yes, it’s THAT expensive. The second stage took us to the town of Bordeaux. It is France’s eighth largest city, but ... read more

San Sebastian Today was our play day in San Sebastian. No history lessons, just sun, sand and surf. The pictures tell the real story. This is more of a Spanish get-away destination, rather than international, although there is a film festival that has been compared to Cannes. San Sebastian is in the middle of Basque country, which would explain the enormous amount of people basking in the sun. The two long stretches of sand were covered with sun worshipers of all sizes, shapes and ages. A curious phenomenon occurs during low tide when a vast amount of sand is available. Throngs of people walk the length of the shoreline in both directions, as if they are strolling along the avenue. Later in the day when the tide comes in, the strolling stops, and people either retreat ... read more

I didn't have an internet connection last night, so I missed uploading this blog..... El Cid’s Burgos Our day in Burgos began with breakfast again, and once again it was the classic European fare full of meats, cheeses and fruits with a croissant thrown in. Scrambled eggs, of course. All of the hotels have a curious way of cooking our style of bacon. They don’t. It’s very limp, almost like it was boiled, not broiled. There haven’t been many takers. The European “bacon” is actually thinly sliced ham that has been salted for preservation. It’s more like prosciutto that is found in Italy. After breakfast, it was out to the bus where we met our guide for the day, Luis. He is a very proud Spaniard and an even prouder “Burgos-ian”. His love for his city ... read more

On the Road to Burgos Early Sunday morning, after another European breakfast, we boarded our bus for the ride out of town out into the countryside and eventually Burgos in the north. We had three stops on our journey north. The rolling hills of Spain are quite beautiful. Bill Zaccone likens the area to eastern Oregon. The winds blow low over the hills, and we passed many groupings of windmills. They weren’t the type that Don Quixote tilted towards. Rather, they were the more modern version. Spain has developed extensive use of wind and nuclear power. Our first stop about 45 minutes north of Madrid was El Escorial. Our purpose was to tour the most famous monastery in Spain. Built in the mid-1500s, it was built over a 21 year period by King Phillip II, to ... read more

Madrid on Five Euros a Day (part 2) Saturday was our first full day in Madrid. Having acquired a taste for the city the evening before, we were now prepared to become fully immersed. We began the morning with a typical European breakfast at the hotel. It was a serve yourself selection of cheeses, meats, melons and tomatoes. Along with these staples were scrambled eggs, slightly cooked bacon, croissants and coffee. There was also a selection of American cereals for the less adventurous. Our first adventure began with a morning bus tour of the city. A lovely Spanish lady named Corina served as our hostess. We were driven around town and entertained with an oral history of Madrid and many points of interest. We drove by the Bernabeu Stadium, home to Madrid Real and former home ... read more

Madrid on Five Euros A Day We arrived at our hotel in the middle of the old city. It took about 45 minutes from the airport, due to the time of day. We boarded the bus around 3:00 p.m., which is the time many workers head home for the day. Since Madrid is a cosmopolitan region with more than six million people, and half of them live in the city proper, traffic is congested in both directions. We are staying at the Petite Palace Hotel right in the heart of Puerta del Sol (the old city). When we arrived at the hotel, we had a couple of hours to unwind before heading to dinner and a walking tour of Madrid. Madame Robb says the rooms are tiny by American standards and some rooms have less than ... read more

Finally, Madrid What is it with airlines and food in the economy section! Our short (by comparison) two hour jaunt from Frankfurt to Madrid included a meal service. Who knew! It was a pleasant surprise. However, the surprise was on me. We didn’t have the choices like on United. There as only one choice and the choice was rubber chicken. Even Madame Robb agreed that it was rubber chicken… and she never has a bad word to say about anything. After a bumpy ride up to our cruising altitude, the flight evened out and was a nice relaxing flight into Madrid. We left the clouds behind as we passed over the Pyrenees into Spain. The approach to Madrid Aeroport was long and bumpy due to the heat coming off of the rolling hills. We were happy ... read more

Negotiating Frankfurt We arrived safe and sound in Frankfurt, Germany after a long 10 hour flight from SFO. The pilot didn’t take the shortcut I had recommended, so we were airborne for the entire time. The group was more or less together just behind the wings. We were treated to the rumble of the 747 jet engines for the entire flight. Three movies and two meal services were squeezed in along the way. I think books and i-pods were the predominant methods of distraction. The bill of fare for the first round of eats was either beef or pasta. At least that was the announced menu. I’m not sure if either one was actually served. I chose the beef and quickly learned that tofu would have been a tastier dish. I know the airlines have to ... read more

The Getaway The group met at Center High School promptly at 8:00 AM with a lot of anticipation. Family and friends gathered to say good-bye to the happy and sleepy adventurers. Even Lucy, the dog, was there to offer support. The big bus had plenty of room for the 18 travelers to spread out and catch up on some sleep. On-board entertainment was a DVD of the Never-Ending Story…. Which this blog may turn into. Senora Zaccone called for a “Passport Check” as the bus pulled away. Thankfully all papers were located and up-to-date. Our driver put the pedal to the metal and used every diamond lane available to get us to SFO in record time. With plenty of time to spare, everyone grabbed a bite to eat and started their shopping sprees. We have just ... read more

We are now in the countdown phase and getting excited for our adventure to Europe. In less than 36 hours we will be aboard our bus taking the group to SFO. It's time for last minute packing, last minute shopping and last minute sleeping. I'm adding our itinerary to this note, so you can travel along with us and anticipate each day's fun. Hold on to your hats as we are about to be transported 5727 miles away. (I hope we don't make a left turn, cuz then it will be more like 19,175 miles). Since we are not in Europe yet, I will not give the kilometers equivelent. Hey, if you are reading this post, you are already on the internet, so go look it up yourself. Aloha!!!!
