Thaipusam in Penang is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival : the 10th month of the Hindu calender. The Thaipusam festival in Penang, Malaysia begins with a parade at 6am on the eve of Thaipusam. At the center of this procession is a deity of Lord Murugan on a chariot. About 100,000 devotees gather in Penang Gotlieb Road to walk with the chariot. The procession weaves through major streets of the city and takes about 12 hours to reach its destination.
