:o Yeah, it's not a trip to Chile unless you get your bag snatched or witness a bag snatching...
The girl who got her bag ripped off in front of me had a $300 camera, her ATM card and 100 lukas in cash in her purse. Uhg. I still cannot fathom why she needed all that for a night out.
At least she had travelers insurance, something I did not have when all my luggage was stolen out of my hotel room in Bariloche...
I feel so touched by your story Pat, yes, I was struck by that line too in the constant gardener.....do we close our eyes to everything or help those we CAN help. Your story makes me feel so emotional and not see it at all as selfserving, but just as awakening to the realities of suffering on this planet but how we can help each other. I will want to talk with you after you see Born into brothels.
I love you so much you are awesome

jiji. ;)
The crucible I see, feel, hear you, Patrick, as in a crucible, both rendered and realized in the same moments. I am glad for you, nostalgic for me, thrown into re-examination. Thank you for giving us this.
hi fantastic blog. I live in santiago, and i am very agree in many points about life, and i think that is the concious what make the diference, and when you get it, i think, is hapiness and freedom, and peace.
generous chileans just wanted to say i've enjoyed reading your blog. that earlier comment on your previous blog seems a bit sensationalistic and in bad taste, but it's your blog.
i just wanted to comment on the generosity you've experienced from chileans. this has nothing to do with their wanting to overcome some negative stereotype from abroad or what have you. chileans are not well liked, if not hated, by many in its neighboring countries but the generosity you've been fortunate to have bestowed upon you is just part of the chilean character. this is especially true if you're a foreigner from far away and alone (if you're a woman it's even better). men will watch out for you and women will want to mother you.
as far as chile's level of developement, i think you're right in comparing it to an eastern european nation, like poland or latvia. chile has entrenched poverty still, but it has made the most progress in latin america in lowering it. the income gap is a problem.
anyway, enjoy the rest of your trip.

Arica,Atacama, Pisagua & Iquique PERU The cities already mentioned used to belong to Peru, not to Bolivia as you mentioned. Peru will take posesion of these territories soon. Chile stole these lands, in a low life expansionsm butchery.....and chile will have to return the land peacefully, or else, force will take its way. Nobody likes wars, but, chile is a primitive country, at least mentally speaking, where chileans feel proud of having stolen land after a campaign of 3 years raping women and children, killing civilians, and, burning down towns. Chile represents the evil .
1984 Patrick! this blog is copyrighted~! wierd, anyways, I am not fully understanding your 1984/hippie relation, maybe you can explain more?? all I can say about everything is wow, I wish I was experiencing this first hand, although reading a blog from studio in brooklyn is a pretty close second...we have a blog too : http://www.probelog.com/fitness/ I miss you like a brother
I´d tell you about myself and my place in the world with a flurry of juicy, descriptive adjectives and mesmerizing anecdotes, except for 1) Tom Robbins already does that, and 2) The more I travel the more I see the more I realize how little I know - most of all about myself.

Thank you for another view of this area and the people. It makes it much more real than others I've read.
