Tranquility in Kullu & Parvati Vallies Coming back from Kinnaur & Spiti we needed some rest from the dens we slept in during the tour. Manali was the right place for that. Probably the most spoiling spot in north India, it is packed with nice guesthouses, very good food, great weather and good atmosphere. The Title is taken from Jimi Hendrix song 'Purple Haze' written under heavy influence of the drugs he was using at the time. This song is one of the psychedelic rock best classics and it perfectly suits the atmosphere of Kullu & Parvati, obscured by the smoke. ... read more

Road Tripping in Kinnaur & Spiti After relaxing in Dharamsala we needed a bit more action, therefore arriving at Manali and hearing about the Kinaur & Spiti tour sounded just the perfect option. While Kinnaur is a green valley rich of vegetation, Spiti valley is a high desert in the Himalayas. During winter it is totally cut off from civilization incurred by the snow blocking the road passes. Ancient Buddhist culture, similar to nearby Tibet, exists in the region which is part Himachal Pradesh - one of the least populated states in India. The roads are terrible, dusty and bumpy, traverse over precipice cliffs and high passes need to be crossed - hair-raising experience, no doubt. Although public transportation is available, it's not frequent nor comfortable, so we hired a jeep plus driver for 10 days ... read more

Recharging in Dharamsala After our ordeals in Uttaranchel we just wanted a place to relax. By then, we had enough of 'hardcore' India so we took off to Dharamsala, a central destination on the 'bitten track' - the popular route that most travelers take. Dharamsala is a small town in north India, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It was brought on the tourism map due to the Dalai Lama placing there his residence after being exiled from Tibet. He settled in Mcleod Ganj, a village above downtown Dharamsala, together with many refugees following him. The relations between them and the locals are quite well now, after lots of tension in the past which resulted in violence. There's no big sympathy between both sides but they get along somehow. Yoga, Tai Chi, Massage, Jewelry and even ... read more

Tough Start in Uttaranchal Traveling is not always fun. You experience great moments and there's nothing like the feeling of freedom, but there are obstacles and less entertaining moments on the way. In India, one of the less comfortable places for the spoiled visitor, we had quite a tough start which almost brought us back home earlier than expected... After leaving Delhi we took a ride to Rishikesh, a popular backpackers town on the banks of the Ganga river. It's a religious place to which thousands of pilgrims arrive to purify themselves in the sacred water. The Beatles visited it in 1967, settling in the ashram of Maharishi Yogi and ever since, the place has become a 'spiritual' center offering anything from yoga classes to cooking courses. The heat was unbelievable - 45C in shadow. It ... read more

Human Jungle of Delhi Delhi is the place where many first-time visitors to India experience the unavoidable cultural shock. We were no exception to this, arriving there after two futile weeks in strike-paralyzed Nepal and landing directly into a literally boiling city, where the average temperature was 40+C. Add this to the commotion, dirt and crowdedness of an Indian metropolitan and you get the picture. To make things worse, the backpackers guesthouses are concentrated in the dirty old central market (Main Bazaar), a unwelcoming place even in third-world standards. Hell, in short. It was amazing to realize that after spending quite some time there we felt totally different about it. Maybe that's the story of India itself - you begin by disgusting it but ends up adoring it (or take the first flight out, as many ... read more

A decade of travels around the globe “Nostalgia isn't quite what it used to be”.... 10 years. A decade. If only someone had told me back then how much there's to see... Flashback to Mexico City's airport, August 2000. We just landed, trying to find our way out of the enormous terminal, feeling utterly exhausted from the long flight. 24 hours ago we were celebrating the Queen’s Day in frenzy Amsterdam. "Excuse me sir"- I'm approaching an officer in uniforms. No answer. "Excuse me!"- I'm trying again with his partner. Still no reply. In the second attempt I'm starting to realize the bitter truth. No one speaks English here! Now how are we going to find a place to lay our heads? We rushed to the nearby public phone and tried the first hotel on our ... read more
