A 6:30am alarm call to ensure that we caught the 8am bus service to Cusco. However, when we reached the bus station we were greeted by the news that a bus strike was on! So it was back to the hotel to await further developments. Evidently the two direct routes to Cusco had been blocked by the locals protesting about polution of the rivers. Nothing was getting from Puno to Cusco! Luciano came up with an alternative plan in conjunction with other groups, we "chartered" our own private bus at a charge of an extra $10US each. That was the good news! The bad news was that we had to go across the mountains and desert on dirt roads. We left around 2pm and got to Cusco 11 hours later at around 1am! Our hotel ... read more

We were woken by our host at 6am for a 6:30am breakfast. We were provided with a bucket of water and bowl in order to wash. Ollie was still feeling queasy, Vaughan gave him an altitude sickness tablet, but he decided to give breakfast a miss. Breakfast consisted of pancakes with marmalade and coca tea. We then said our farewells to the family, bought the chullo hats we had been knitted and were then escorted to the boat for our 3 hour trip to the floating Uros islands. We visited two of the islands which are made entirely of reeds from the lake to a depth of 2m. Whilst three islands have been around for many years, the locals appear reliant a great deal upon tourism, selling handmade goods from reeds and from weaving. It ... read more

A 6:30am alarm call started off the day! After a very basic breakfast we were transported to the docks in a bicycle contraption which had two seats at the front and a pedal cyclist at the rear. We rode at breakneck speed in convoy across the city. At the port there was a simple food market where we were invited to buy some basic provisions for our homestead family. We bought some rice, sugar, bananas and crayons to go with the football that Ollie had brought from Engalnd. We the "set sail" across Lake Titicaca to the island of Taquile which took 3 hours. What followed was a lung-busting walk up a 500m hill to the Main Square. Our guide for the day - Roger gave me some leaves of a plant called Muna which ... read more

A morning briefing by Luciano before our flight LAN LN100 from Lima to Juliaca via Arequipa. Finally leaving the smog of Lima the airbus 319 refuelled at Arequipa at the foot of many spectacular volcanoes, the highest of which was capped with snow. The city of Arequipa is literally in the middle of a desert, but obviously watered by the melt water and rain from the the volcanoes. When we arrived at Juliaca airport we were greeted by a band playing traditional Peruvian panpipes. We were met by a minibus which took us the 45km through a number of shanty towns until we reached the city of Puno on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Our simple hotel was the "Italia." Climbing just three flights of stairs made us breathless although Oliver was coping better with ... read more

After a good first night's sleep in South America, we were the first and only people up for breakfast at 7:30am. Ollie had fried eggs and I had scrambled egg and bacon with coca tea. We then took a clapped out stock car, (taxi,) driven by Raul to Huaca Pucllana an ancient adobe pyramid built entirely by hand from mud bricks. Alex was our personal guide to the site built around AD200. Two-thirds of the original site has been built on for domestic housing, but what's left is still an impressive site. We were introduced to Jose the unique hairless dog who guards the site. Raul was still waiting in his yellow taxi 90 minutes later and he took us to the centre of Lima giving us his life story in Spanish and trying to ... read more
