A 6:30am alarm call to ensure that we caught the 8am bus service to Cusco. However, when we reached the bus station we were greeted by the news that a bus strike was on! So it was back to the hotel to await further developments. Evidently the two direct routes to Cusco had been blocked by the locals protesting about polution of the rivers. Nothing was getting from Puno to Cusco! Luciano came up with an alternative plan in conjunction with other groups, we "chartered" our own private bus at a charge of an extra $10US each. That was the good news!
The bad news was that we had to go across the mountains and desert on dirt roads. We left around 2pm and got to Cusco 11 hours later at around 1am! Our hotel Tikiwasi was set around a garden courtyard with fabulous views over the city, (we would discover at breakfast the next day.)
