The Blue Lagoon is a marketing marvel ... how do you make an environmental mess into a tourist trap? Well ... a geothermal power plant had believed they could return the waste water back deep into the earth by just letting it flow out and that it would naturally seep into the ground. It did for a while, but after a few years, the ground couldn't absorb anymore and the waste water started accumulating at the surface. No environmental impact studies? No problem ... just build some fancy looking buildings, name it the Blue Lagoon, call it a spa, charge an arm and a leg to get your body soaked and voila!... read more

The Skaftafell glacier in the Vatnajokill National Park is very large. The drive south is on rugged roads. It was good to have a 4WD, as some of the hair pin bends and steep inclines made it a little "exciting". We met some local Reindeer hunters on the road. Hunting licenses are issued by lottery, and these two guys were both lucky winners of a limited number of licenses. They send the carcas to a processing plant for their winter supply of meat, but they had the trophy antlers with them.... read more

We hiked down from the Krafla crater's Hverfel tephra ring down to Myvatn town. We finished the day with hours of soaking in the Myvatn nature baths - a series of hot spring fed pools with natural (i.e. mud, not tiled cement) bottoms.... read more
