What used to be the Republic of Vietnam's (i.e. South Vietnam's) presidential palace is now called reunification palace or independence palace. This is where those two Chinese and Soviet made tanks burst into in April 1975 to bring an end to the American war here that followed the French war that followed WW II. OK, the Americans had left a little while before that, but it was end of the divided country. The palace has been left intact from that day, to serve as a stark piece of history. It has giant banquet halls, huge meeting rooms, a movie theatre, helicopter landing pad, a basement war room with command and communications gear and even a shooting gallery in the basement war room. Replicas of the two tanks that burst in to end the war are parked ... read more

N..'s kind of on an accidental round the trip this summer. He's getting from Doha to Vancouver via Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia with a transit stop in Seoul and onto Vancouver through Seattle. First stop Saigon. The American war ended 35 years ago, and Saigon is a dynamic place with lots of energy. There's lots of travellers here. So many in fact, that street hawkers carry piles of Lonely Planet travel guides and try to sell them while you're eating at the street side stalls and cafes. I'm going to start with the pictures first, and then add text when I find the time.... read more

We left the best of Qatar for our friend G..'s last weekend. We went dune bashing in the desert south west of Mesaieed, right near the Saudi Arabian border. It was amazing. Those drivers know their stuff, and it helps that they let most of the air out of the tires of the 4x4 before we set out. I think the pictures tell the whole story. Loads of fun, even if you're not an adrenaline junky.... read more

Visited all the corners of Qatar with our German friend G... Zubara fort is to the north, Dukhan beach is the west, the singing sand dunes are in the east and Sealine beach is in the south. In between it's desert and that's where the Sheikh Faisal museum is located. The singing sand dunes are near the large American military base. We got there in the heat of the day, and the sand dunes were super hot. We found it hard to try and run up the dunes, as the hot sand got inside our footwear (We were not wearing boots). G.. even lost his sandals a little bit up, and was hopping up and down in his bare feet at the bottom while N.. and W.. went back up the dune to recover them. The ... read more

Did all the touristy things we didn't do when we first came, because we had our first visiting guest. Drove all over Qatar and even went dune bashing. Loads of fun! These pictures are of Doha itself, including the newly opened Museum of Islamic Art. It's wonderful architecture.... read more

No trip to Mombasa is complete without a train trip on the romantic (i.e. old) Rift Valley Railroad to Nairobi. We got first class sleepers for the trip and had to accommodate a tight schedule. The train only goes on certain days, and since we'd arrived on a Thursday, the next train out was on Sunday evening scheduled to leave at 19:00 and arrive at the Nairobi train station at 08:30. Hakuna Matata. Our flight back to Doha was on Monday afternoon at 14:20. Assuming the train would be 3 hours late arriving, (after all, this is not the German Railways) we would still have plenty of time to make it to the Nairobi airport. We had a double compartment with four sleeper beds between the three of us. We could lock up the doors and ... read more

We could not find a reasonably priced beach location nearby to Mombasa, so we asked the airport taxi driver for a recommendation and he took us to the New Palm Tree Hotel. Many places jack up their prices by over five times between Christmas and New Years time! We needed some rest time, to get over some cold and flu symptoms. W.. and N.. had both been harbouring cold/flu like symptoms during the Safari and E.. finally succumbed to it in Mombasa. We ended up spending lots of time in our hotel room and the wonderful roof garden / courtyard. Walking around the old town part of Mombasa is similar to Stone town in Zanzibar. The Swahili influence is very strong, and Fort Jesus, that was built by the Portuguese in their vain attempt to hold ... read more

Zanzibar has only one airport, so no risk of going to the wrong airport this time. The flight to Mombasa was on a bigger plane than the one from Arusha to Zanzibar. It is such a joy to walk on a tarmac and up a stair case to get to a plane. It feels like real travel. In cold Canada it certainly makes sense to protect the passengers from the dangerous elements outside. But jetways don't give the same feeling of journey as walking on a tarmac and up a flight of airplane stairs. Of course, we have the luxury of saying this while we're young. When we're older and feebler, we'd probably be asking for jetways in place of staircases. Another small reason why we're trying to do as much travelling at this age before ... read more
