Port Blair 2nd October Okay, today is a tough day. By sometime, it has been crystallising inside my head that today is Gandhi Jayanti and most probably most of the sites would be shut. We made a try for the Ross Islands and yes, that was operational. So off we went to the first British settlement and the Jap Invasion. Tickets to the island: Rs 75 return, from the Water Sport's Complex Jetty. Entrance fee: Rs 10 per person. The most amazing site on this island were the Ficus trees which grew all around, over, through, under and inside the brick structures. I have never seen trees like that. It almost felt that they have grown on top of these structures. And when you went looking for these complex forms, within these broken, devastated, ravaged ... read more

1st October, Havelock This day dawned quite early, as it was our last chance to see the sun rise through the water. But the gods conspire against us - the entire horizon is cloudy, and so as they say 'no cigar'. But it was lovely to sit on the beach as it slowly became light, to talk and sing, to just keep looking, while the sun climbed up from behind and slowly creeped out of the clouds . 7 o'clock and we have a long day in front as we plan to get back, especially if we plan to get back to PB today. I also wanted to run across and call home, but no power and hence no STD booth...don't ask me..it sucks.. After breakfast we left for the jetty, where the ferry ticket ... read more

30th September, Havelock. Okay, now for the sown seeds of yesterday. The Bengali restaurant owner at lunch time had mentioned one Elephant Beach, which was either accessible by boat or by a trek through a forest trail. It was secluded and empty and stunningly beautiful.... So next morning, it seemed that the idea was to find that beach. Now treks through forest trails leave me essentially cold, so my bet would have been the boat, but the hotel guys made it sound quite easy, the map looked like it was really a small stretch and so like a fool I agreed to what seemed like a walk to the beach, yes through some vegetation. To note, I was dressed for the beach, with my beach flats on, just the WRONG thing for a forest trail. ... read more

29th September, Havelock, VijayNagar Beach I never sleep well anywhere on my first night, and this early dawn break was creating havoc to my system. I was up at 4 and could not sleep. After tossing and turning for a while, i felt it was better to put this wakefulness to good use, and off i went to the beach. The light was just creeping up, and everything was just ethereally silent. I could see the waterline way up, where it had come up at the high tide and everything had a washed up look. I sat with my notebook and my camera on one such washed up rock and as the water lapped on my feet, i wrote and took snaps and waited for the sun to come out. And it did, and how! ... read more

28th September Port Blair The next day dawned early for me - i was just figuring out that the sun actually rose by 5 over here. A quick breakfast (which was included in the room rent, and which was quite extensive and I ate well - I had skipped dinner last night) and waiting for Ingo's flight to come in, I decided to take a walk to the market which did not seem too far away. And early mornings are always so great to walk, and what better way to get a feel of the place? As I left the hotel, I felt it would be a brilliant idea to buy an umbrella - the sun definitely did not feel inclined to show its face. The walk to the market was interrupted by many small, ... read more

27th September, Chennai Central Station. Great Indian Railways. The Train arrives in Chennai perfectly on time - 6.00 am. It never amazes me, the whole Indian Railways thing. Its like a nation in itself, and the stations its cities. As we come onto the Chennai Central platform, a new dawn is breaking in that city. People, ingeneous people still to wake up from their night's sleep, sleeping in proper beds - mattress, bedsheets, pillows, covers, mosquito net hitched up between adjacent station benches. Somewhere people wash up and brush their teeth, somewhere people are getting ready to start their day with boarding the train they must board. And over all the enormous gulf of people, like a steady stream, slow, langurous, moving in one (or predominantly one) direction, weaving, lurching, swinging. As i got on ... read more

26th evening Train to Chennai The day was a whirlwind. Just so many things to take care of and with that my almost visceral need to spend more time with Sanaa. She has been trying to come to grips with my travels, and i have been trying to find some justification within my head. To go away for a week without her? Why? Why am I guilt tripping so much? I am taking the Chennai Express. A little nervous about the fact that my flight leaves at 10 next morning. It should be easy, I hope the train is not delayed. I have just one bag, I can put it on my shoulder and run if need be. May be i am just worrying too much. Was it important to do this? Would i be able ... read more

Okay, so I am off tomorrow, and this might be my last day of free internet. It seems momentous to me, leaving alone for almost a holiday all alone after such a very long time. Will I be okay? Will I miss them so badly that I hate being away? Will I just be dying to come home? Will I keep everything together? What if I am sick? Enough worries. I have work to finish yet, but i guess very little would now get done. I am already on the trip in my mind. Tomorrow evening I take the Chennai Express starting from here at 17.20 and reach Madras early morning. From there a rush to the airport for the Deccan flight to Port Blair. Costed me Rs 12,000 and change for the return. We are ... read more

Bursa So the next day we rush out in the morning to catch the ferry to Bursa. It is getting freezing cold here, and its supposed to be colder there. The ferry which people do not really know much about it seems is a very good option. 20 liras all the way to Guzelali and then you catch a bus to the metro station to go into Bursa. We were fixed up in a small little old house with a really nice old couple and very very antique plumbing. Thankfully the blankets are warm, the rooms are clean and the heating works. And it is reasonably cheap. Bursa is an old Ottoman city. The first Ottoman city in fact. A stylish town with an old heart, it hugs the slopes of the Ulugu mountains and is ... read more

The Saturday was brilliant. First we went to the toy museum. It was biting cold, and rainy, so we were glad with the lift we got from Kemal's boss, a two door salon car with a stick shift gear and driven like a maniac. And there we were, aross the Bosphorus to the Asian side. As Kemal said, we had come home. Across a beautiful suspension bridge, one of the longets we have seen, and into the very residential quarters of the Asian side. The toy museum is a five floor house converted to a veritable toy gallery, surely almost one of its kind, founded by the Poet Sunay Akin in 2005. A quick search in the internet would get you the directions and if you are travelling with kids, try to make it for the ... read more
