May 28 Today we needed to meet with the manager of the place we’re staying at at 10am so we slept in and then got a bit of a workout in. When we checked in, we had agreed to move to a different room on another floor so that a group coming in that had 2 rooms could all be on the same floor. The room we were moving to was one that you would actually have to pay more for because you have your own bathroom, although it’s still out in the hallway, not in the room. However, there wasn’t really a kitchen up there, and we liked the room less, so we were disappointed that we had agreed to move, even though they ended up giving us 10 Euros back for our trouble of ... read more

May 26 Very early start this morning. We took our last vaparetto ride (those 72 hour rolling tickets were definitely worth the money), and got to the train station just before 8am. Then we had a four hour train ride to Rome. Finally we see why you need reservations for some trains. Until this point, we never saw the train cars more than half full. This train was packed, and people had soooo much luggage with them. I feel like I have too much and all I have are a carry-on size bag and a backpack. Many people have those extra large suitcases, and then seem surprised when it is hard to get around with them, or there is nowhere to put them on the train. Pack light people, pack light. The train ride was mostly ... read more

May 24 We slept in, checked out from our hotel at 10 am and walked to our next hotel, where we would spend the next two nights. Fortunately it was nearby, but check-in at the new place was at 1 pm. That was a little inconvenient, because we didn’t want to leave all our valuables in the lobby with our luggage, so we had to carry heavy bags around town for the next 3 hours. We walked all the way to San Marco square, where we discovered visitor information center and we decided to buy 3 day public transportation pass for 22 euros per person. We took a vaporetto back to our hotel. After we checked in, we went to the Jewish Ghetto to get some lunch. Molly found an Israeli restaurant with vegan options called ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic May 26th 2010

May 23 We woke up at 5:15, had some breakfast thinking there would be no food on the train, and took a tram to the train station which was only two stops away. We were pleasantly surprised when the train showed up. It was the best train that operates in the Czech Republic. Shortly after the train departed there was a complimentary coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, orange juice, croissants, and baguettes. Better than being on a plane for sure. There was also a dining car with full bar and wide selection of meals. The train was almost empty and so we could spread out anywhere we wanted. Once we got to Austrian border, there were some technical difficulties and the train was 16 minutes late coming into Vienna, but overall it was a very good ... read more

May 21 We slept in until 11, had some breakfast, and then went to the train station. We activated our Eurail passes and made reservations for the train trips we are doing in Spain for the both of us, and for Carson and her friend Jenny whom we will meet up with in Barcelona. We also walked around a bit to familiarize ourselves with the train station since we will be leaving at 6:40am on Sunday, so we want to know exactly how to get around once we arrive. On our way back to the apartment we walked around looking for a fan so I can sleep better at night, and checked out a fitness center near the apartment to see if we would want to go exercise there if it’s not too expensive. We made ... read more

May 19th We slept in until 11 this morning, so we are not quite used to the time change yet. We are staying with Filip's grandma while we are in Prague. Filip called the Czech Airlines to see about our bag, and if it had come in already, or if they had at least located it. They had located it in London, and thought that it should have been on the flight that had come in half an hour before, but were not yet sure. We tried to venture out to find this grocery store near Babi’s (Grandmas) apartment that might have some soy yogurt and other items that I could eat, but since it was cold and rainy we didn’t look around for long and went back to the apartment. Filip again tried the Czech ... read more

May 17/18th Our travel started out fine in Grand Rapids, though we came into Chicago a little delayed. We had plenty of time at ORD, which I definitely recommend because it takes a bit of time to switch from domestic to international flights, or vice versa, and then you have to wait in line if you need to check in, and you have to go through security again. We stood in line for almost an hour and a half, only needing to print our British Airways boarding passes. We had thought there would be self service kiosks we could print them out at when we got to Chicago, but there weren't and they couldn't print them when we checked in at Grand Rapids because the first flight was serviced by American Airways. Our flight left a ... read more

On last Monday and Tuesday Filip and I drove the 1600 miles from Salt Lake to Grand Rapids. It took about 24 hours of driving and we completed the entire trip in about 31 hours. It was quite uneventful except for the drive around the bottom of Lake Michigan, near Chicago. They drive like maniacs, and force you to drive like a maniac just to avoid being run over by a semi. One nice thing to see on the way are the wind farms that are mostly located in Nebraska. We are just about ready to leave for Europe, flying out tomorrow afternoon. Still getting things ready and getting our packing finished up. Next time we write, we'll be in Czech Republic. Molly... read more
