When you ask someone what Rome gave us, inevitably, straight roads comes up rather quickly. Today we head for the outskirts of Rome to walk along the very straight and famous Via Appia Antica, The Appian Way. First, a word about Roman traffic. Crosswalks and stops are clearly marked. Lanes, however are not. Passing another vehicle and making a turn are very freeform and improvised affairs. Our bus ride is no exception. We wait in the bus for a minute or two before our bus driver hops on board. Slim-bodied with her hair tied up and sporting a badass pair of aviators, she throws her bag in the corner and kicks the ignition. If I knew the Italian expression for “Hauling Ass” I’d use it here. Woe to the Vespa that attempts a left turn in ... read more

We start the day with breakfast in the hotel. Pastries, cereal, fruit, meats, cheeses, you name it. They offer a warm drink which tastes basically like water and pineapple juice. A bit weird at first, but I grew to like it. We set out early for the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, a 10 minute walk from our hotel. It’s not every day that you look down streets to see sections of a structure from AD 80 peeking between people’s laundry lines. When I first see it in its entirety, I feel the need to re-calibrate my expectations. It’s not that it’s any less impressive than any of the images I’ve seen in the past, it’s just that the mind, with help from film, television, photographic prospective etc.., has a tendency to explode the myth and ... read more

9:15 a.m. Rome Time A smooth descent begins over the Atlantic. We follow the coast of Italy southbound before turning east to approach Fiumicino Airport where we land (with applause, no less), pick-up our luggage in less than a half-hour. We take the “Leonardo Express” non-stop from the airport to Stazione Termini, Rome’s main rail station. The Hotel Morgana is about 5 minutes from the train station and thankfully our room is ready and we’re allowed to check in early. If I can get in a shower and a nap before lunch on my first day in Europe, then jet-lag is pretty much a non issue. So, after the aforementioned shower and nap, we decide on a short walk to Trevi Fountain. We start off heading west on Via Principe Amedeo and pass by the Teatro ... read more

For every journey a song. In some cases, lots of songs. After having the better part of a 160GB iPod to listen to in the planes, trains, and hotel rooms during my Germany trip last October, I've decided to "downsize" to 12 albums on a Shuffle. Music has always been an integral part of my travels and I've found that less is more when it comes to "Road Music". Spending my mornings in the courtyard behind our apartment in Paris listening to Jeff Buckley's "Sketches..." and The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi" accompanying me to the west coast of France are both pre-iPod memories from when I used to pack about a dozen cds for a trip. Having a limited supply helps insure that the music and the place have a chance to adhere to one another in ... read more
