We arrived into Australia around3pmlocal time. The flight with Qantas was good, despite the air steward offering Mark a nutty ice lolly. He was not impressed! We found our shuttle to take us into the city center without trouble, and having previously planned to meet up with friends from home who were in Melbourne at the same time we headed to their hostel. As they were out at the time we dropped our bags and walked towards the city centre. As Melbourne is such a big place this was a longer walk than we had been use to in NZ.When we arrived into the centre there was quite a busy atmosphere due to a comedy festival that was coming to an end. Next door to the comedy place was the large Cathedral which overlooked Federation Square; a ... read more

With our time in NZ coming to an end we headed further up north towards Auckland. We had given ourselves enough time to make sure that we were able to visit the bay of islands far in the north. We arrived into Auckland, NZ biggest city with a third of the population living there. The city was huge, very built up, woth lots of skyscrapers, shiny leather shoes and real big boats in the harbour. As we would be spending two stints in Auckland, either side of the Bay of Islands, we did not rush around. Instead shopping down the vast Victoria St and ending up in the harbour to watch the sunset. We were slightly outpriced of the bars in the harbour, but with the nice array of boats, good architecture (some well lit) and ... read more

With our Kiwi Experience pass we were able to travel to the western side of the north island, to the areas of Waitomo and Raglan. This meant that we left the actual Kiwi bus and joined a smaller outfit that headed out to the cave region of Waitomo. We were warned that Waitomo itself was a small place with very little to do other than caving. This was an understatement; the town had grown solely by the tourism created by the cave formations. Waitomo is very isolated and set in a dramatic hilly backdrop surrounded by agriculture. The nearest ATM was 17km away. We went to look at the caving packages on offer, including a 8 hour trip called the black abyss which included an abseil onto the cave itself followed by a couple of hours ... read more

After a night back in Christchurch we had a other stop off in Kaikoura on our way north. We travelled up to Wellington the capital of NZ- although everything was all closed for Easter so we didn't actually see much of it. Most of the day was spent on the coach and a long ferry crossing where Mark listened to harry potter Audio books being very antisocial. We arrived at about 5 at Base hostel, not looking forward to its lively reputation and immediately had our beer confiscated. tuts. This was a boring day and we went to bed early. The next day however (Good Friday) we got up early and headed straight out to the National Museum of New Zealand 'Te Papa' where we looked at Dinosaurs and the country's natural history of volcanoes and ... read more

We headed inland further towards the great lakes, including Lake Wanaka. We stopped off at a small cafe that overlooked the Cook mountain range. We went for a short walk and were able to see Mount Cook in the reflection of the lake, just in time as the weather soon deteriorated. We then carried on through the Haast Pass, and despite it sounding dangerous, it was merely the boundary line over the mountains. On the western side the weather was very wet, with the water from the pacific unable to get over the mountains. The climate on the east was very arid, and although mountainous, it was much drier. We arrived at Lake Wanaka, a huge lake set in the backdrop of the mountains. We had to stay in a Base hostel, which although was clean ... read more

We left Nelson on the 20th, after managing to squeeze on to the bus. We were forwarded up the waiting list, so were very pleased! New driver and a new bus load of people who are really friendly. Stop off in Nelson's Lakes National Park and take photos of each other jumping off the jetty. the water was freezing!! good fun though. Only managing 4 jumps into the cold water, Suz returned to get dressed, finding that a duck had left a nice little present on her jeans! cheeky. It came off in the water though. Later on we decided to do a bit of Quad Biking. Mark's idea. On arrival at the adventure Park near Westport, we were given helmets, glasses and overalls to protect our clothes from the dust. It took some getting used ... read more

Hello from New Zealand! We arrived into Christchurch on 14th March, after a fairly bumpy flight as the cyclone that has caused so much damage to Fiji was well on its way and struck the day after we left, with all island hoppers having to go back to the mainland. Suzanna had her boots checked by the guards as she appeared dodgy. Mark panicked for a short time as he was unable to withdraw money from the airport cashpoint, however after riding along the 7$ shuttle bus into central Christchurch he was able to access funds at another ATM. The hostel was fairly large, but not the 'Base' that the majority of backpackers travel to, so fairly friendly and relatively quiet. After settling down and meeting our room mates we took a map and headed out ... read more

BULA! We arrived in Nadi International on the mainland Fiji, 6th March at 6:00am. We had a short transfer to the Hostel, which was more like a hotel than a hostel with two pools and two restaurants, a movie room and games room. We quickly felt at home! As we started early we lazed around in the sunshine by the pool. After recovering from some jet lag, we lost the 5th of march, it never happened, we had dinner in the restaurant which was really good food and cheap. We re-packed leaving some heavier thicker clothing at the hostel on the mainland. Our island hopping adventure started at 6:30am; after breakfast we jumped aboard the window less bus to take us to the marina. Denarau port was very pleasant with a golf course winding between the ... read more

Hello from America! It is our last day here, we fly to Fiji in a few hours, very excited! We arrived in LA on tuesday 2nd afternoon to LAX after an 11 hour flight and decided to get a shuttle bus straight to our hostel- a little more expensive but the other option was getting two buses and a half an hour walk- not so appealing. We spent the rest of the day in Hollywood. We saw preparations taking place for the Oscars which start in a couple of days; we say the handprints and stars along the pavements as well as Batman and Darth Vadar. Darth looked like he had put on a few pounds. After an early night and a long sleep, we woke up at 7am on wednesday 3rd and soon we were ... read more

Hello from Mark's backroom. It seems that the closer we are getting to our travelling excursion, the more things still need to be done. However, as promised, after much fighting with the computer and the inter web we have eventually got our Blog up-and-running. As we prepare to embark on our trip into the unknown the task of successfully jetting ourselves around the world, taking in the sights an sounds of all the wonderful places we plan to visit and then returning home again safely in one piece, seems more and more unachievable. However, through thick and thin, we vow that you at home; sitting comfortably in your armchairs, sipping tea and feeling dry and warm, shall be provided as close to first hand as we can supply, the ins and outs of our great adventure. ... read more
