La Gloria No Way?! I heard a few people mention there had been a PCV here ''hace muchos aƱos'" haha. Did you have a host family when you were here? I'm working with the 2 primary schools, the school in Pueblo Nuevo,an empresa de credito, and have other english, computer, and coaching sessions. Here's my email if you want to share more about our experiences: mbarberet@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you!
I was there too! I just found your blog. Are you still in La Gloria? I lived there from 1991 to 1993 as a Peace Corps volunteer. I was mostly working in prechool, kindergarten education. I'd love to compare things. Everyone called me Juanita.
tico time Hi Lorraine "Tico time "is like ''island time" but not as drastic. It means that generally in Costa Rica most things don't start on time or people come like an hour after they are supposed to. So far I have yet to experience this at my site. And it's sad that as an American I am more on Tico time than everyone else and I'm always running late!
I know the frustration! Hey B!!
I totally know the frustration of not knowing the language- I learned that very quickly when living in Spain. BUT, it does get better and it gets better really fast!! Soon you'll be speaking and won't have to re-translate everything in your head first. Enjoy!!
Hey Erika Hey Erika! Thanks for reading the blog, I wish I could update it more! I might be able to use the internet at a new center that is on my island, I'll see what I can do! Hope everything is going well, dont work too hard over there in America! take care
Hi Marie! I tried leaving a comment but I don't think it worked (my work gets picky about comment boxes lol) I just caught up on this blog. Such an awesome experience. I'm bummed I missed you over Christmas but I will keep up with this blog to stay "connected." Thanks for letting us live vicariously!
Love,
Erika
Hi Marie! Hey Mar!
I just caught up on the blog! I'm so upset I missed you over Christmas. This whole experience is amazing and I'm glad you are allowing us followers to live vicariously. What are you up to since you returned to Vanuatu???
Howdy Hi Marie,
I wanted to send you a few words and tell you that I am still a regular reader of your blog. Sorry about the kitten, it did look very nice. It must have been hard for you, as I know being pcv can be very lonely. It also happened to one of my PCV friends, but her cat was eaten (it was in Africa), I'm not kidding.
Anyway, the pictures are beautiful and such a visual trip ! Here in Monterey things are sleepy as usual. Yuwei Shi is going to be the Dean of the new combined school, which everyone is pretty excited about.
The economy still sucks, thank you very much, so your timing was unbelievably good. You'll essentially come back right when thejob market bounced back. Good move ... .
Hope all is well.
Cheers,
Yves
ps: of yes and my wife is pregnant. We're going to have a baby in the fall. SO EXCITED
Great Photos Hey, great blog. Makes me homesick for Malekula. I've got a few months before I can make it back, but thanks for tellin' the stories till I can get back to make some of my own. If you need anything from the states, drop a line and it'll be there in a few months. Always happy to help the Peace Corps.
Hey Hey Yves, thanks for the message and the update of what's going on in Monterey. I feel a little disconnected from what's going on in the world haha. I found out about our new president about 3 days after election day ha. So for that it would have been nice to be in the country but other than that I can't complain, I love it here so far. Good luck with finishing up the semester and the job search, keep in touch! PS my training village is full of French army men bc they're helping build a school and they love their short shorts... and hitting on all of us peace corps haha
Hey Hey Marie,
Thank you for this - and the pictures. I am glad that you seem to be doing well ... and adjusting to kava, which I am told indeed tastes pretty awful.
Here things are tagging along, except that it's really cold and my motorcycle does not start in the morning ... fun.
Good timing to be in the Peace Corps for 2 years while the economy slides in the worst recession in decades ! I wish I had done the same right now, because I am graduating in December and the job market really sucks.
I keep running into Dempsey, who took an unpaid job with Convergent Energy right after the business plan. It seems Michael Griffith is struggling to get some money for CE ... as we expected. So Dempsey is already looking around for other jobs.
Keep writing and good luck with the rest of the program.
Cheers,
Yves
An Eye Opener It's wonderful learning about such an interesting place that I would never know about if it wasn't for Marie Barberet and the Peace Corp! I will keep up and look forward to hearing more.

Fun Sounds like your having some fun so far. A little different than London I'd say. I just wanted to wish you luck before you head off to the wilderness.
Hi Marie,
Thanks for sending me the link to this blog. I am glad to see that you are well. Same old here in Monterey, except that people are very up in arms over the planned merger between the business and policy schools.
I'll check back later. Take care.
Yves
