Don't worry about the lesson :) Your lesson has so much pizzazz that it will be a hit. It is also probably so far from what Chinese students are used to that they will really enjoy it. Good luck. My classes are following everyday. They love the strange food pictures. Tell Felde that the toilet picture was a hit. They couldn't believe that squatting was in order!
In Preparation... Seeing as you have now gone longer without Dr. Pepper than you ever have I am giving all the DP away in preparation for your return home. Maybe I’ll even make you a DP sobriety chip too.
Good luck on the Mentos and Coke experiment!
Dispel those stereotypes! So, you are more an ambassadress than you thought you would be. You went to share science pedagogy, and the best thing you may share is that Americans are incredibly cool...and kind. Hang in there, girl! I am very, very proud of you.
DP I was reading some highlights of the blog to Mike and he asked do they have Dr. Pepper over there? I hope so! And I hope it tastes like a normal one!
I could not do the seafood looking at me either....LOL! I am such a picky eater, and I think that you are doing a great job of trying things. I can't believe that you had a drink! I think Yves would love eating various animals and animal body parts :-) I can't wait to hear how the lesson with the kids goes.
AAAAMAZING!!! I still can't believe you are in china right now!!!! OMG!!! and that you are trying odd foods and drinking none the less!!! China is good for you :) I'm with Josh....totally jealous......but soooo soooo proud of you! makes me want to go back to school right now :) Danielle didn't know you left for china....needless to say she is pretty upset with you for not calling her....haha. love reading your stories....you are cracking me up!! wish i was there with you promoting science and all! miss you and love you!
Woo Hoo Well I'm glad you took a picture because I had to see it to believe it. I sympathize with eating things that have eyes, I don't think I could do that either. That tongue looked so gross. I am proud of you for trying stuff though, you never know what will be good, sans eyes and tongues of course. I can't wait to hear about the experiment.
Love you!
good stuff I am enjoying reading your blogs so much, its so interesting to hear and see about such a different culture. I think I would be starving though as like you, most of that food I would not touch. I was shocked to read about you drinking and doing several toasts so in my mind I'm thinking you're going to say you downed all these glasses of wine and got drunk only to find out you had at least ONE full glass! I almost fell out of my chair laughing at that! Look forward to hearing more...love you!
Brave girl! I am so proud of you for tackling the cuisine and the toilets...and for not backing down on the lesson you had prepared. If they give you a hard time, say, "Oh, my! We have all heard about how much more advanced the Chinese students are than in the US, and this is the simplest less we could manage by our standards." Snotty works, when pressed.
I did my only non-western toilet at a Bastille Day celebration in France...after dark and after much more than one glass of wine. The light bulb had burned out, so I just left the door open and pretended I was in the field at home...you learn how, but you are right...it is the thighs that make the difference!
I am so glad you are having this experience...it sounds like so much fun...and different enough that you could never prepare for it. I am glad you could move on after the laptop...bummer.
Unbelievable Mariah,
Red wine is good for the heart so one could say it is medicinal. You should seek out vegatable dishes or noodle dishes they are much safer. I think you would like rice wine (saki) served warm. That may be a Japanese thing. Don't you just love the lazy susans (food dishes on the spinning table in the middle of the table)? I bet the students will love the experiment. Working with translators can be difficult. What I learned was to talk to your audience as though they understand,ie facial expression, entheusam etc. Don't face your translator face the class, just make sure you don't out talk the translator or they will miss half of what you say. You look like your doing well and you look like your having fun. Good luck avoiding TD. I should have warned you about the public restrooms. The farther out from bigger towns you travel you may run into unisex toliet facilities.
Love,
Dad
My Wife The Lush! Ha... ok so maybe not, but don't think I won't be copying that picture for posterity sake. That is like seeing Bigfoot or the Lockness Monster! I bet you are exhausted but yet took the time to tell everyone about your daily adventures, I think I speak for everyone when I say "Thank You", it must be hard to find the motivation but you’re a trooper.
Keep soaking up the experience and enjoy yourself... and for goodness sake, eat some Turtle!
oh And you didn't drink squat! Don't be a pretender! I saw you lick 2 drops of wine! but I can understand since you were doped up on your Zanies!!!!!!!!!!
Watch out for the bikes... I totally forgot about the sidewalks as streets!!! Sorry! Oh and watch out for bikes and scooters, the drivers have death wishes... Nanjing is so beautiful and Wuxi will be fun!
I'm so glad that all of you arrived safely. I'm loving reading your blog and looking at all of your pictures. Have a great time on all of your adventures!
This is so cool, being able to see you and hear about your day makes it feel like you are close. Helps a mother not worry so much. :)
What an amazing adventure you are on. I am so excited for you. You guys sound important. At some point please tell exactly what it is you are doing over there.
Love you!!!
Meal Mariah,
You should stick with the vegatable dishes. It is true they eat almost anything in China. During the last olympics I received an email with some of the food (I use the word in the broader term) served at the food court. What you had at your banquet was very tame. 40% I'm very proud of you, keep it up. Again the pic's are awsome.
Love, Dad
Good Start Mariah,
Very happy the blog is working. Good pic's and excellent naration. The hotel looks great, breakfast backgroung pic, and hope the food agrees with your tummy. Keep it coming, it's almost like being with you. The tunnel between concourses in Chicago is really cool with the lights and stuff. I hope the flight back home goes as quick. Looking forward to next update.
Have a blast,
Love, Dad
OMG I am so jealous and proud of you! Mariah, no alcohol, What a shocker! I am so proud of you for trying the food. i hope that is on camera! It is so weird to think that you are so FAR Away!!! I'm leaving for SACNAS this week and I have to say CHina has robbed me of my BFF- My first SACNAS without you!
Congrats on finally trying some new food! I've already eaten at Taj Mahal now that you're gone... See, I told you that you were going to have a wonderful time! Just wish I was there too! Na, my Chinese friend, told me the pickpockets are bad in Guangzhou and that you must be very careful to lookout for cars. Have so much fun!
I am Jealous! Now THAT is how a day of sights and food should be done, even if you didn't eat the turtle (Boo). The pictures are fantastic and I can tell you are having a great time and really taking advantage of the experience. YES... I am jealous!! I miss you a ton!! ... But next time try the turtle ;)
I am a PhD candidate at Purdue University and I am traveling to China with the NSF funded GK12 program. Starting in Nanjing/Wuxi to observe and participate in their science education program then to Guangzhou to do collabrative research on rice blast disease. I hope to take a few weekend trips to Shanghi and Hong Kong before returning home. No matter what it is going to be an adventure!!... full info
