Cheap Cars
Only other thing I can think of are rental relocating deals. Transfercar is one of them. They give one-way deals.
If you're buying, check the hostel and backpackers bulletin boards in Ackland and CC. You might find a deal from someone who's heading home.
I don't want to get my nose into the car buying scene, but the WOF I talked about earlier gives you a much better chance of getting a good vehicle. NZ won't issue a registration until the vehicle is run through and checked out.

Buying a Car Yes. Two. But I bought them through dealers. I also bought a movan. It's easy to do. The NZ government requires inspections before a vehicle is licensed. When we came back to NZ each year we had to run it through the WOF station (Warrent of Fitness). If it passed we could renew our registration. WOF stations don't do the work and won't recommend anyone for repairs. You get it fixed on your own then come back and try again.

I've returned to New Zealand many times. As a single woman traveling alone, I rented cars and stayed in motels. I've toured both islands in a rental movan, and I've spent six US winters zigging up and down both islands in my own New Zealand motorcaravan.... full info
