Unrivaled trip
Ben, I recalled that when you came to exchange in Hong Kong, we went hiking together. Our ex-hiking peers haven't gone hiking for some time already but I bet we all enjoy reading your blogs. There is an old Chinese saying that reading tens of thousands of books does not learn as much as walking tens of thousands of miles. Thanks for your sharing of your seeing and encounters during your 2+ years world trip. Glad to know that you would soon finish your trip and return home... You may miss all the time you have spent so far around the world. We would also miss your blogging and update. Wishing you all the best!~

Enjoy Panama (and don't forget to buy a hat)
Hi Ben, Just enjoyed reading your Bocas-episode. I was there in 2006: brought back some nice memories. Only thought to write because saw your travel map (impressive - mine is one less country than yours!) and wanted to say: don't forget India. It's like another world really, traveller's dream. And you are welcome here too if you ever happen to be passing by Dhaka, Bangladesh (also a great traveller's country). Cheers, Andrew

"that was not enough"
Haha That is very funny that your boss said that at your speech! It means he had a sense of humor and let you go in a good note :)

Some comments
"As hard as I try, I cannot see the attraction to retire in such a place. If you want to live just like at home, why move so far away in the first place?" Actually, isn't this rather obvious? They desire to live just like at home, and abroad they can do so much cheaper. (I don't really know the price level in Panama, but I would expect it to be significantly cheaper than the US). "Norway is a nation famous for killing whales for profit and torpedoing any European and international effort in establishing a law prohibiting the commercial hunting of whales. I guess there are very few whales left at home for them, so they have to come all the way to Panama to spot these endangered mammals." I find this a rather unnuanced comment (which is kind of surprising, coming from you). Norway only hunts a few Minke whales, which are (supposedly) not in any danger of extinction. Though, it's kind of strange that Norway have been so resilient on this issue, since we are usually more than willing to embrace all kinds nonsense that comes from the UN and eager to respect international institutions. Personally, I don't really care much about this issue, but since our government was pro-whaling, I used to have some sympathy with the anti-whalers, although I have a feeling the government may have been right on this one. It's amusing to hear though, that Norway is "famous for killing whales for profit" instead of as a "humanitarian superpower", as the government wants us to be known. By the way, you can go on whale safaris many places in Norway, just try googling the term. No need to go to Panama just for that. I suspect that the whale safari was not the only reason the Norwegians had come to Panama. P.S. Surely I can't be your only reader who wants an update on what happened to the ridiculous US jaywalking ticket?

What? The last stop???
Hey Ben, what's that crazy-talk about returning to Germany? Man, you can't do that! I've been reading your blog for I don't know how long now and dream away with your stories; it would be a shame to see that stopping! Besides, I don’t remember reading anything about Africa, India… and I am sure some other spots you should go. No chance to keep you up in the air? I mean, there should be some publisher willing to give you an advance payment on your book which will – I am sure – follow soon?!? Anyway, if it really has to be I just want you to know that you are my hero and I hope I will still be able to see some of the sights you have been able to. Let me know when you are back and near Bonn, you are more than welcome to visit us (and once we have moved into our new flat in Bonn stay with us for some days)! All the best, Philipp

Living The Dream
Bravo for you, Ben! Your experience has been wonderful to follow. You are a good diarist, very straightforward. I've enjoyed your travels tremendously. I guess the best thing about you is that you live life to the fullest. Can a man ask anything more of himself?

home again?!

Funny observation
Ben, as an American I was amused to read the words "nine-to-seven office job". I was recently talking with my direct report, who is originally from France. I was joking with her that we should be French in the respect of a 2 hour lunch break instead of 30 minutes. She then reminded me she worked until 7PM, so it not as perfect as it would seem. So, for me to read about "nine-to-seven" is amusing to me. For us, it's "nine-to-five" (well, really 8 to 5). We just don't take a long lunch break. And yes, traveling to gringofied destinations is more fun than 9 to 7 or 9 to 5...

Enjoy
Another enjoyable read. I'm 20 days away from coming to the region and still reading blogs etc for tips. I too will be heading south from the north. Are you planning to go to the San Blas islands? What about Colombia? I know it's S. America but you hear a lot of good things about the place. Enjoy your time out there. P.s. are you taking anti malarials? And have you seen many bars in the region where you can watch football, as in soccer? Cheers.

BBC Radio Programme Interview
Dear Ben, I am writing from a radio production company called Tonic Productions, based in London, England. We are currently producing a BBC Radio 5 Live series called Men's Hour with Tim Samuels. In each episode, broadcast live every Sunday at 7.30pm, a group of guys from all walks of life discuss two issues of particular relevance to men. There are also pre-recorded elements in each episode, as well as live phone-in interviews. One of the issues for this week's show, broadcast on Sunday 15th of August, will be hated jobs. We want to hear stories of guys who have left unfulfilling employment to pursue a dream career or lifestyle. I came across your blog and found that you left your job to go travelling, and have been on the road for over two years. Very impressive, and inspiring! We'd like to interview you by phone for this week's show if you'd be willing. We can call your mobile or a nearby landline if you have access to one. We'd like to hear about what motivated you to give up your job and live the dream, and about what you have gained from your experiences. We'd like to inspire our listeners to recognise the possibility of ditching the rat race for a life of adventure. The interview would take place live by phone, and would last around 5 to 10 minutes. This would be a good chance to publicise your blog, and tell the world about your experiences on the road. Let me know your thoughts on this when you can. I look forward to hearing back. Best wishes, Josh Twivy Tonic Productions josh.twivy@googlemail.com

Daisetsuzan National Park
Hello, Im planning on doing a five day trek through Daisetsuzan National Park in a couple of weeks and I came across your posting. It sounds like you had a great hike and reading your post got me really excited about this challenging yet beautiful hike. I was wondering if you could send me the hi-res maps you have of the area? I am the same exact way! it's truly terrible what these missionaries and "volunteers" do to vulnerable people, anyways Just thought that was great what you wrote!! P.S. be ready for american prices here in costa rica ( except for lodging, cabs and cigs lol) I CANNOT wait to leave lol!! happy trips man, add me if you would like as costa rica was my rest period from the states before I start my travels...
