Everything locks in Lima, and I mean EVERYTHING. The gate outside the front door, the front door itself, the bedroom door, the door to the balcony. When you hail a cab, you do two things: haggle over the price, then hop in and lock the door. If you don't the driver will do it for you. That's so no one jumps in and carjacks you en route, I assume. Nice to feel safe here, really. Glad I'm headed off before too long! Still, I did have a great first day in the city, and our little gaggle of white people was escorted around town by Lidia and by Monica, a fellow volunteer from Columbia who has been here for over a month already, and thus knows her way around both the dizzying labyrinth that is Lima
