You might perceive the idea of getting someone less well off to do menial work as exploitation. Or one could see it as providing much needed employment for unskilled people desperately in need of money. The ability to wash one's own clothes does not neccessarily build people of wisdom and character.
Interesting observations and great blog by the way!
Crazy I'm glad that you're enjoying it. I'm leaving some stories out, but they are minor events that will probably be told better in real life anyway. Like the story of me falling face first down the stairs in my lecture theater a couple weeks ago. :S
Thanks for sharing! Hi April...
Bev McCartney has shared your blog with me a couple of times lately. It is so neat to hear of your adventures and of your reactions to the culture and environment there. We were talking about abundance! Our abundance! and it is something that we here in the USA take so for granted. And I think, why is it "granted" to us? I have been in Nicaragua and Tijuana many times, and have seen and experienced a little of what you are seeing in Africa. Once a person is sensitized to what most of the world has in their daily life, we see ourselves in a different way. It is something that I think about alot.
Your mom grew up in the church in FD where Gary (my husband) was the pastor, and your grandma Jane is one of my friends.
We think of you...stay safe. Jan
What great pictures and comments! You are having loads of fun exploring and going to concerts.....I'm envious. (Sin, sin, sin!)
I enjoy reading your letters.
Bev
Vashti For sure. Sadly, I left her at home this weekend when I hiked the mountain, so she missed out on those fun shenanigans. Don't worry, there is more to come!!!
Sprinklers I will be sure to watch out for those sprinklers. So far I've done a good job of avoiding them, but every once and a while they give me a scare.
I'm excited about church also, but unfortunately I don't know if I'm going to make it this weekend. I'm going on an overnight hike Saturday and then Sunday evening my program has bought us tickets to the sunset concert at Kirstenbosch. I'm excited to go back though. Hopefully I'll make it back soon.
Love You
So happy to hear your good news! Hi April - We were so glad you had a great weekend. It all sounded like so much fun. U Roy will certainly appreciate the shark pictures - he is such a fan, you know!!
Glad the church services went well. I'm sure there are lots of differences in the way people worship. It is interesting to me but I sometimes feel like you do - a bit uncomfortable.
Continue to have fun! Beware of the sprinkler attacks now that you have put the fear of shark attacks to rest.
We love you and pray for you daily. Take care!!
wow i cant even imagine the things you are seeing. it sounds magical and a wakeboarding club to top it all off. so awesome!
miss you way more than you could miss me considering the things you have been up too!
love u
Thanks Thank you Terri and the rest of the Nelson gang. That is exactly the verse I was needing at this point in my life. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.
Hello Down There! So glad you made it April! Sounds like your journey to the other end of the world was full of adventure. We Nelsons will be praying for you as you settle in to a new routine in a very new culture. "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future." Jer.29:11
I'm your average college student, and I haven't done a lot of traveling. In fact, I've only left the U.S. once, and that was on a cruise to Nassau Bahamas. Regardless of my travel history, I will be spending the next 4.5 months in Cape Town South Africa, and I want to document my adventures in one place so that all my friends and family can keep track of me.... full info
