If you're looking for a more tranquil place in Marrakesh, the botanical garden is definitely the place to go! If there aren't too many tourist of course.. The garden created in the 1920s and 1930s by the French painter Majorelle, was bought later by Yves Saint-Laurent. Here you'll find a mix of beautiful colors such as yellow, cobalt blue, green. The garden contains palms, cacti, olive trees, bamboo, and many other plants and shrubs. There is also a cafe inside a small courtyard where you can get a drink. Very strange that you can search such a long time for such a huge palace. I'm sure you understand by now, that it wasn't easy for us to find the entrance of the El Badi Palace... Nowadays, the El Badi Palace (which apparently means "The incomparable") is mostly in ruins. If you go upstairs, you can admire the stork nests from a closer view. The palace itself was built in the 16th century by Ahmed el Mansour. It is said that parts of it were paved in gold. In the central courtyard, you can see four sunken gardens and some pools. The Saadian dynasty ruled Morocco around the 16th century. At the tombs you can find -we haven't counted them, but they say- more than 170 tombs, not only family members of Ahmed el Mansour but ... read more

During our trip to Marrakesh, we visited Djemaa el-Fna several times, both during the day and night. During the day, it's rather calm. It's really a huge square, where you can hang around. From there you can do a little tour with the calèches or walk to the Koutoubia. Since the minaret of the Koutoubia is nearly 70 meters high, you can use it as a reference point when walking around. Atop of the minaret there are three copper balls, thought to be originally made of gold. The story goes that this was a gift by a wife of a sultan for breaking her fast during Ramadan. The best moment to explore Djemaa el-Fna, is after fall of the night. When you smell the food being prepared in the food-stalls, you know the action is going ... read more

Grand vizier Si Moussa built the Bahia Palace (which name means "brilliance) in the 19th century. It was afterwards extended by his son. Here you can see beautiful decoration and optical effects on the woodwork and stucco work. After entering the Bahia Palace, you'll find yourself in an arcade countryard. There is also another courtyard with cypress, lemon & orange trees and jasmine. The entrance fee when we visited the palace was 10 dirham.... read more

Finally, we were going to see Marrakesh, which has been for a long time on our to-see-list... We arranged flights and sleeping accommodation in a riad in advance. The expectations were high, not to say very high. After arriving at the Menara airport, we decided to take a "petit taxi". Despite the fact that we urged three taxi-drivers to use the meter, they all refused and proposed a fixed price (which was much higher than the price listed in our travel-guides). We weren't even able to negotiate a lower price with them. So after a little bit hesitating, we decided to go for the proposed price (which was the same for all three of them) and drove to the city centre. On the road, traffic was coming from all sides at all times. It was a ... read more

We have always wanted to visit the Mosselle valley. Since we are from Belgium, it is not too far from where we live. The culture and environment are completely different from the one we are used to at home. Sounds ideal for a short break with kids. So off we went! Glad to say we were not disappointed. The Mosselle valley is a very beautiful environment to visit. I have the feeling that many Belgians underestimate this. We visited a number of villages and towns in the Moselle valley. Many impressed us because of their beauty. These trips had another thing in common, namely the fact that we tasted several times the delicious riesling wine. Needless to say we bought some riesling wine for back home...... read more

Eating and drinking in Beijing was quite an experience for us. What a difference with European meals! One of the first nights we decided to try the famous Peking duck. Therefore we went to "Qianmen Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant". There we could see the preparation of the Peking duck. Funny, but apparently every duck has its own certificate! Though it felt a little bit like a tourist trap, it was quite worth the experience. In Beijing, there are a lot of things to eat that you absolutely can't find on the menus in Belgium. Food that could be ordered included jellyfish, stuffed fish head, duck leg, filled quail head, meat into duck blood,... At the Donghuamen night market, you can taste things like starfish, caterpillar, scorpion, ... Though I didn't taste the exotic food, I have ... read more

The Lama Temple (also known as Yonghe Temple) is Beijing's largest Temple. It was once the official residence of Count Yin Zhen. In 1722, the Count became emperor, his named changed to Yonghzeng and he moved to the Forbidden City. So the name of his former residence also changed to Yonghe Temple. In 1744 the residence was converted into a lamasery, a monastery for monks of Tibetan Buddhism. The Lama Temple features five main halls with different mixed styles. Outside the Temple it was plenty of shops where people could buy incense sticks.... read more

The Great Wall is a kind of mandatory excursion when you are in Beijing. There are several areas around Beijing where you can visit the Great Wall. We visited the area of Juyongguan, situated at about 50 km Northwest of Beijing. This part was constructed in the 5th century and is surrounded by mountains. It was strategically important, connecting the inner China and the area near the northern border. Since its proximity, it was also important for the defense of Beijing. It is one of the three greatest passes of the Great Wall of China. Unfortunately, the view was cloudly during our visit. We walked the complete tour, about some 1600 steps. At the foot of the wall, padlocks are attached by Chinese couples to insure prosperity, a wedding tradition. There is also a shop where you ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Summer Palace February 20th 2007

The Summer Palace is the place where the Emperor came to evade the heat in the Forbidden City in the summer. From the hilltop perch, the Emperor could survey the imperial navy drills. The palace itself is constructed on a 60 meters high hill, named Longevity Hill. It consists of different temples, gardens, lakes, pavilions and corridors. Beside the hill there is also a lake, called the Kunming Lake. Kunming Lake ( 2.2 square kilometers) was entirely man-made. They used the soil to build Longevity Hill. The Marble boat is situated near the Kunming Lake. The story goes that Empress Dowager Cixi used the money originally earmarked for a modern navy to build the Marble boat instead. The boat itself is constructed on solid stone base, so that it couldn't sink, meaning that the Qing Dinasty ... read more
