"Abandoned for fifty years, with the house and garden overgrown and crumbling, the restoration of Aberglasney is one of the country’s most remarkable garden projects. " (Extract from Aberglasney Gardens’ promotional leaflet) Aberglasney? You’ve never heard of it? Well, yes, I guess it must be one of the best-kept secrets in Wales. Some may have heard of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, found somewhere in England’s West Country. Aberglasney is the Welsh equivalent - a garden lost in time. It’s located in the Tywi valley, just off the A40 at Llangathen in Carmarthenshire, between Carmarthen and Llandeilo, in South Wales. It’s a little gem. Like most people, I never win competitions - but, in June 2006, I won a week’s rental of a five-star holiday cottage in an on-line competition on ntlworld (now Virgin Media) offered ... read more

Friday the 13th. The superstitious probably wouldn't have gone anywhere today, but I had to be back in the UK this weekend so, with some reluctance, we had to leave the pleasures of the beach for the city of Mumbai (Bombay). The morning was spent repacking and the afternoon flying by Jet Airways northwards back to Mumbai. It was an uneventful journey. Pintu, on his second flight, was now an old hand at this flying lark. Neither of us was prepared for the journey from Mumbai Airport into the city, however. The taxi which I'd arranged to meet us at the airport failed to materialise, so we took an air-conditioned cab with a meter, expecting it to cost around 400 Rupees. The traffic was ridiculous, however, and we spent ages in jams, resulting in a final ... read more

Goa is an ideal place to just chill out. Once you've seen Old Goa with its reminders of past Portugese rule, there's really only the beach - at least that's the case here at Bambolim. At some of the bigger and more touristy resorts there are discotheques and shops close by, but here there's only the hotel and a couple of beach bars. The day after we arrived - Tuesday 10 January I think - we went on the hotel's bus with other guests for a long afternoon and evening excursion. We stopped briefly at a Hindu temple, then continued to Old Goa. There, the clean wide streets, lawns and buildings had a distinctly European feel - not much of a surprise really as this was a Portugese colony until as recently as 1961. I believe ... read more

We took a taxi from Mumbai Central to the domestic airport, about an hour away. Despite the wasted time at the station, we were now well ahead of schedule and changed our bookings to an earlier Jet Airways flight. This was another ‘first’ for Pintu, who had never before been inside an aircraft. His excitement as we boarded the aircraft, hurtled down the runway and took off was a joy to behold. He was fascinated by the view of clouds from above and, of course, I had to take photos to remind him of this memorable event. The flight to Goa was scheduled to be an hour but only took about three quarters of that. The hotel, alerted to our earlier arrival by my telephone call from Mumbai, provided transport from Dabolim Airport to Bambolim Beach, ... read more

I’d hoped to update my blog this morning but, just as we arrived at the cybercafé, it was this district’s turn for its daily two-hour power cut. We could have gone in search of another café in a neighbouring district which might have had power but thought better of it and went to find somewhere to change some travellers’ cheques instead. The observant among you will note that my earlier blogs have since been updated with photos (on my return home!). We said our thanks and goodbyes to Jai Singh when he dropped us off at the railway station in good time for our train to Mumbai (Bombay), leaving just after 14.00. He had proved to be a good and reliable driver - I can certainly recommend him to anyone planning to hire a car in ... read more

Now where did I get to? Oh yes, we'd arrived to a very warm welcome at the Maharani Bagh Orchard Retreat. Perhaps I should first tell you a bit about this hotel. It's located near Ranakpur, a famous Jain pilgrimage site, and is owned by the royal family of Jodhpur. The garden ("bagh") and orchards were laid out by the Maharani of Jodhpur in the 19th century and the cottages in the grounds were converted to hotel accommodation in more recent times. Since our visit in 1997, a new accommodation wing has been added and an indoor restaurant and larger swimming pool are now nearing completion. None of the new hotels in the area can boast of century-old gardens to compare with those here, nor with its authentic atmosphere; it is truly a haven of tranquility. ... read more

10 January 2006 We had a problem with the internet connection last night, so here's the rest of what I had intended to send. We're happily installed in Goa now and a further missive will follow a.s.a.p. Create your own travel map Tuesday 3 January Today was another day of discovery. First, our driver took us to the block of apartments where Lajpal shares a room with cousin Ravindra. Small but comfortable, ideal for both of them to spend their time studying (which they both seem to do most of the time). My first discovery was that the young man I knew as Lajpal or Goldy was actually known by everyone else as ... read more

It has been a very full week. Apologies for the lack of communication - which is due to a combination of a packed schedule, cyber cafes in the wrong place or at the wrong time, and power cuts resulting in them being there but not in operation. I’m writing this from the office of the manager at our hotel in Goa on Monday 9 January. What follows is therefore an update on what we’ve been doing during the past week (or at least as far as I can get by the time he goes home in an hour or so). Sorry, no pictures, yet. So where do I start? How about here? Where else would you find a roundabout in the centre of a city of over six million people at the intersection of four major ... read more

I'm all prepared - itinerary, air tickets, rail tickets, car rental, hotel reservations, visa, jabs, money... All that's left is to recharge the camcorder batteries, pack, and get to Heathrow in time for check-in on New Year's Day. Pat will drop me off en route to her own holiday with her parents in South Wales. Let's hope it doesn't snow! Meanwhile, Christmas is almost upon us and I'm still in sunless Hertfordshire. Our son Richard, daughter-in-law Gina and beautiful grandaughter Teagan have already arrived from mid-Wales, and daughter Karen arrives tomorrow from Essex. The fridges are crammed with enough food for several armies. The tree is surrounded by presents. And we'll soon be surrounded by our family, as it should be at this festive time. I'm pleased to be spending Christmas at home, unlike many of ... read more

I had to prepare a plan, particularly as I only had two weeks to spare for my visit to India. I spent almost a month researching where I’d like to go and the most economical way to get there, then sent details to Lajpal. However, he didn’t want to go to Ranthambore National Park - poachers have killed so many of the tigers that the chances of seeing one are now very poor. He wasn’t too keen on my idea of the cultural sights either - on my menu were Agra (the Taj Mahal, which I've seen three or four times anyway), Varanasi (formerly Benares, the holy city, the Ganges) and Khajuraho (temples, erotic carvings). He wanted to go to Goa! Well I suppose he would, wouldn’t he? - he’s from near Ranakpur in inland Rajasthan, ... read more
