Yo! Today Jodie took me to the bird market! When we were in Beijing I dragged her to one because I have a bit of an obsession with bird cages. The one in Hong Kong was even better! The place was just full of men talking to their new flying friends. I just found it really cute because they seemed so content and happy in their own little world. Jodie and I looked a bit out of place as we were the only females walking about! There were hundred of birds in cages hanging from trees and a few escapees flying around! I really wanted to buy a cage to add to my collection but it would have got squished in my suitcase coming home. Hong Kong is very westernised so it’s nice to see that ... read more

HO HO HO Merry Christmas from China!! It’s Christmas Day and I’m sitting on a beach under a palm tree. Jodie and I arrived on Langtau Island yesterday, which is one of the Hong Kong islands. It’s about 25 degrees today so I think it’s fair to say it’s the hottest Christmas I have ever experienced. Every one is walking about in shorts and t-shirts, it’s so surreal. I am also surrounded by mountains and there are lots of scary cows wandering about the streets. Just now there is a little Chinese man walking across the beach with a sack of crabs. He looks a bit like Santa, except he has crabs instead of coal and a dog instead of a reindeer. I’m having one of my Chinese moments where I just sit, look around and ... read more

Ni hao followers! I have finally arrived in Hong Kong; it’s good to be back in China! Both my flights were delayed due to the terrible weather, but I think I’m very lucky to have even made it here. I understand you have a fair bit of snow!!! My Edinburgh flights got delayed because they needed to de-ice the plane but “couldn’t find the keys”! There was proper riots going on at Paris due to delayed/ cancelled flights - lots of shouting, swearing and insults towards the French! My actual flight was also entertaining …… I got stuck next to two Chinese men who had smelly feet, burped, snored and openly picked their nose. They also took up half the row. Eh, personal space! It was nice to see Jodie’s friendly face at the other end. ... read more

Today I felt creatively inspired, truly! This morning we were given the choice of visiting the British Council or the 798 Art District. I chose to visit the 798 Art District which is located northeast of central Beijing. The area is known as a “soho-esque” area of Beijing and houses an artistic community. It is every artist’s dream! It is some times dangerous taking me to these sorts of places because I can get too caught up in the clouds. It made me think back to my art college days and where my paint brush could have taken me.……. (although the reality is probably no where!) The area is the site of state-owned factories including Factory 798, which originally produced electronics. In 2002, artists and cultural organisations began to divide, rent out and re-make the factory ... read more

Today has been one of the best days EVER! I had my last Chinese lesson this morning - it was very emotional! I shall miss my teachers, being called Ma Hong Kai, the sugar and I’ll even miss starting at 8am! I was only just adjusting to starting early! Although that maybe has some thing to do with my morning trips to McDonalds - they sell real coffee! Ok, they sell pankcakes and syrup too - caught out! We spent the lesson revising for our afternoon exam and rehearsing for our graduation performance. You will be pleased to hear that I passed my exam - woop woop! It’s amazing how much you can learn in 12 lessons! I really want to continue learning Chinese and am going to look into studying over the summer. It would ... read more

Ni hao followers! The online blog has unfortunately not gone to plan because my precious laptop has broken (Dad, we are going to the shop first thing Saturday morning, ok?). I was quite upset about it, however my room mate said I'm "less boring with out it" haha. In a strange sort of way I'm glad it is gone because I've been able to spend more time out and about. I have been keeping a paper journal to record all my adventures, so don't think you are getting rid of me that easily! I'll upload it online when I am home. I'm sitting on a dodgy computer in the University campus just now. I feel like that woman out "Murder She Wrote" (is that what it was called?) punching down hard on the keys and making ... read more

After our morning Chinese class we all went to visit a local secondary school. Our visit included a presentation by the vice principal and face to face communication with school pupils. It was interesting to receive information from both teacher and pupil! During the presentation the teacher spoke about the school facilities and mentioned an observatory on top of the main teaching building. We were each assigned a final year student and they took us for a tour around the school. They had the opportunity to practice their English and we had the opportunity to practice our Chinese. The first place my student wanted to show me was the observatory and he seemed really excited about this. When we arrived there the door was locked and he explained that he had never been allowed in the ... read more

This afternoon the Scottish University students were invited to a Scottish Ministerial event at Beijing Jiatong University. The event was in connection with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and their involvement with China. The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong learning, Fiona Hyslop spoke at the event about strengthening links with China and the Scottish Governments aspirations for future engagement. She announced a new scholarship to encourage more Chinese students to study in the UK and plans for future research. We had the valuable opportunity to meet with Chinese students who will be moving to study in the UK. They were so excited to meet us and extremely friendly. I think I made more Chinese friends in that one afternoon than I have in the past 2 weeks! It was a great opportunity to exchange opinions ... read more

We had a cultural discussion in the second half of our lesson today. Up until now I’ve felt cautious about the way I behave in China because I’m not fully aware of what is culturally acceptable/unacceptable. I was told so many stories before I left e.g. don’t sneeze in public, don’t show the palm of your hand, don’t leave your chopsticks lying in the bowl and so many more! Our teacher told us not to be worried about what we say in the discussion because it’s not about what is right or wrong. She was just as interested to hear about our culture, as we were to hear about the Chinese. It was a good opportunity to discuss our differences and begin to understand the reasons behind them. We touched on so many different topics e.g. ... read more

Today’s Chinese class was particularly interesting. In the second half of the lesson we had a discussion about Chinese society with Miss Fong. It was a good opportunity to ask her questions and listen to a personal account of daily life in China. Miss Fong also spoke about her 14 year old daughter and her weekly routine. It basically consists of studying, studying and more studying! She is in class from 8am until 5 pm each weekday. After mealtime she studies from 8pm - 11pm AND attends three school classes on a Saturday. The remainder of the weekend is spent reviewing work and doing homework. Generally speaking: from the age of 3 children attend Kindergarten. They learn to speak English and learn simple Chinese characters - how impressive is that?!
