South America » Peru » Amazonas » Chachapoyas November 5th 2006

After the Galapagos Islands, I headed south through Ecuador staying in Cuenca for a week to learn Spanish, however I picked up a stomach bug the day before I was to start my first lesson! which made the whole experience even harder trying to study for 4 hours every morning and then returning home feeling shattered! From there I went to a place called Vilcabamba for a couple of days and then it was onto Peru! I wanted to visit a place in northern Peru called Chachapoyas, a small town that is difficult to reach to say the least! What an adventure it was getting there I can say. Left Vilcabamba on Sunday morning to a place called Zumba, it took 5 hours of beautiful scenery in the National Park of Podocarpus. Arrived in Zumba ready ... read more

The arrival was quite scary, approaching Isla Santa Cruz at about 200 metres high (it felt like the wing tips were going to skim the water) as the runway is right on the edge of the Island was a bit frightening. Had to drive through the centre of the Island to get to the south where we were to catch a speed boat for 45 mins (I just had to focus on the Island behing us for the whole time and I couldnt speak with anyone in case I was sick!) to catch up with the boat, Angelique and the rest of the group (remember I was a day late because of the flight cancellations). So first stop Floreana Island, the first thing I saw were flamingos then manta rays, crabs, marine Iguanas, sea lions and ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito August 30th 2006

Sorry its been so long in writing this but as you may have already read I have been very busy since I arrived in Quito, Monday 7th August 2006. On arriving in Quito, I was plagued with a combination of jet lag and altitude sickness straight away….not a good start! But the different smells, sights and general cultural differences in Quito proved that my South American adventure had well and truly begun!! I decided to leave Quito asap so that I could find a nice quiet place to acclimatise and sort my head out. I booked an 8 day Galapagos cruise starting Thursday 17th August on a boat called the Angelique. This meant leaving Quito and travelling to Guayaquil to catch my flight. So………. I left Quito firstly for a place called Latacunga, a smallish town ... read more

Hola Amigo's! Well some of you already know how stressful this planning stage has been for me these last few months, I never realised it would be such a logistical nightmare! Arranging and organising everything to take for 6 months especially travelling through the diverse climates of the Amazon, Andes, Patagonia and who knows.....maybe even Antartica, has proved more difficult than I first thought. Tomorrow I fly to Madrid for the weekend which I am really looking forward to, at least then I can relax and start to enjoy the beginnings of my adventure. It will also giving me some much needed Spanish practice! However I may realise how poor my Spanish skills are and end up panicking before I go! Not much else to say at this stage..... .....watch this space ;o) ... read more
