Hi, guys! I'm in the dry and dusty city of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan in an internet cafe in the back of a tiny dress and shoe shop with an old fashioned fan whirring away as I type. The shop is open to the street, so we hear horns blaring constantly as if they were carrying on a conversation (which in a way they are, because everyone uses horns to signal what they are going to do). Out the door I can see yellow and green buses, cows, camel carts, ox carts, bicycle rickshaws, and three-wheeled auto-rickshaws. I wouldn't even attempt to drive here. The traffic is sort of like bumper cars. Everyone just honks and squeezes in wherever there is room. Pretty wild! Jaipur is called the "pink city" because of its ... read more

Without question, the highlight of the visit to Delhi for me was the dinner that my roommate Anita F. (from Nebraska) and I had in the home of a highly educated and very hospitable couple named Vikas and Shikha S. Vikas is a Delhi-educated stock broker and lawyer in his 30s, who speaks impeccable British-accented English. His wife Shikha is a dynamic young woman who also speaks flawless English and is highly educated (with a degree in mathematics). Anita and I met Vikas and Shikha when several Indian Friendship Force couples joined our group for cocktails and dinner at our hotel. Vikas told us that he holds a seat on the Indian stock exchange with his brother. Shikha, who was wearing a beautiful orange sari and diamond jewelry, explained that she is now staying home ... read more

We began our first day in Delhi with a buffet breakfast at our hotel, the Hans Plaza, followed by a brief greeting and orientation from Pulin Triveda, representing Friendship Force of India. We also met our 28-year-old tour guide Raj Deep, whose baseball cap and broad smile made me think of Tiger Woods. Following our orientation at the hotel, we we climbed into a modern, air-conditioned tour bus to see the sights of Delhi. I sort of felt like we were in a bubble looking out on a chaotic world. My first impression was that there were LOTS of people everywhere -- perhaps not surprising, given that India has more than a billion people and that Delhi alone has about 14 million people. The traffic was intense, with buses, cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles spewing ... read more

Today I met and enjoyed a wonderful hour and a half lunch at the Trio Restaurant near Dupont Circle with an old "India hand" Pat W., thanks to an introduction from my friend Kassie L. Pat is a witty, straight-talking, irreverent, short-haired, heavy smoking, 60-year-old woman from Texas who reminds me of Molly Ivins. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in India, lived there 8 years and became a Hindu, and is now involved with an international company that specializes in the export of Indian agricultural products. She also speaks three of India's more than 1,000 languages. What luck to get to meet her! Pat said that once we get on the Air India flight, we will feel like we’re already in India. And, it's going to be a long flight, so we'll have plenty ... read more

It's snowing--our first good snowfall in DC this year! Having just come in from a walk, I'm now trying to figure out what to pack for the trip to India and Nepal, where the temperatures will be between 65 and 88 degrees F. We're permitted to have 30 kg (66 lbs) of luggage. One challenge is trying to figure out what clothes to take. One Web site said travel as lightly as possible--both clothing and laundry service are very inexpensive in India. Another person also suggests buying clothes to look like Indian women (i.e., a sari or a salwar kameez) to keep men from staring and groping. (But it sounds like blondes and redheads are going to get stared at no matter what they wear.) A lot of the stuff I'm taking will be things other ... read more

Welcome to my India and Nepal travel blog!!! This is my first try at blogging. I wanted to share my travel experiences with my friends and family, so I thought this would be fun to try! On March 21, 2007, about a dozen of us are going on a "cultural exchange" to India and Nepal organized by Friendship Force International, a nonprofit organization founded by Jimmy Carter and others to foster relationships among people in different countries. That day we all meet up at JFK Airport in New York to fly to New Delhi via London's Heathrow airport. My stepfather Hal and his wife Susan are going to be on the trip, and I'm excited to be going on a trip with them. I'm really not quite sure what to expect in India. I've always been ... read more
