Today we met up again with Gail and Olin to start our trip that would last 15 days and go through three countries. We explored Lima some with them, showing them our favorite spots and getting some awesome Peruvian/asian food. We went and saw ancient temples just outside of the city and visited a shanty town. Then we headed for Cusco. This way was much better, as instead of a 20 hour bus ride, it was a 1.5 hour flight. We arrived in Cusco and immediately hopped on a bus and headed down to Pisac, and nearby town (technically just a province of Cusco). We visited some nearby ruins that we really neat, and learned about how the terracing that the Incas put in works. I never knew how many cultures and civilizations there were before ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores August 2nd 2012

We got to Lima after a loooooooooong bus ride and found a hostel in the Miraflores district of Lima. Lima is an enormous city, stretching as far along the coast as the eye can see. We checked out the ceviche, as Lima is quite famous for its ceviche. The restaurant that was advertised though was pretty gross and neither of us could even finish our meal. For dinner we went to a Burrito Bar in Miraflores, which we both absolutely LOVED. so delicious!!! We hung out in Lima for nearly two weeks, taking cooking classes and a salsa class, enjoying the beach (and not being at high altitude), and exploring the city. We used our new cooking techniques and ingredients to make up some phenomenal dishes, like Fish Tacos a la Huancaina (using a special spicy ... read more

Hello, Peru!!! After a LOOOOOONG bus ride, we finally made it to Cusco! We got a reccomendation from our cab driver of a hostel, as it was the middle of the night (why do we always arrive in new towns in the middle of the night??!) and we didnt want to just wander around. In the morning, we saw how great of a place he picked. It was right next to the central square, near the palace of the archbishop. Also nearby was the San Pedro Market, which was absolutely amazing, and had the best juice that I´ve ever had in my life. We hung out in Cusco for a few days, just enjoying the town and the sights, plus got tattoos and I got a nose piercing! I love Cusco, it was much cleaner than ... read more

Finally getting ready to leave Bolivia. Wow, we did NOT plan on being here so long, but it has been a great time. Caught a bus from La Paz to Copacabana (not in Brazil, it´s a big town on the shore of Lake Titikaka), about 3 hours. We got in rather late, so we watched the sunset over the water and had some fresh fish (only place in Bolivia, as it´s a landlocked country). We took advantage of our last hot shower for a while and then the next morning set off. We hiked for almost 8 hours up the peninsula, headed towards Isla del Sol. It was long, it was high up, and a LOT of uphill, so it was quite taxing. We stopped at this crazy Bolivian who wanted to show us literally about ... read more

3 Julio Today we set out to Rurrenabaque to visit the Bolivian Amazon rainforest, where (compared to Brazil´s) it´s supposed to be much easier to access the deep jungle. We had been told by many other travellers that the 20 hour bus ride from La Paz to Rurre was the worst ride in all of South America, so we decided to check out our other options. We found a taxi company who claimed they could take us there in 9 hours, and it didn´t cost too much more than the bus ride, so we decided to go with that. Long story short, it took us 12 hours of bumpy roads (I couldnt sleep because I had to lift my arm for every big bup, or else jar the bones in an excruciatingly painful way) and being ... read more

The two weeks that Justin and I spent at La Senda Verde animal refuge were awesome. It is located on the Yungas Road, not too far from Coroico. We were able to work with so many amazing people and animals there. Justin built a bridge! At La Senda Verde I... 8 de Junio Yesterday we were pooped, so we chilled all day. This morning we got up to bike down the world´s most dangerous road. We drove up to the snow, chatting with our aussie guide, Mark. We then rode down through several different climates. It was gorgeous and such a blast riding on the cliff edge(seriously, cliff edge). When we were almost at the bottom, I got a little overconfident. I was flying down the hill, then hit a ditch? I flew over my handle bars, landed on my head, flipped, hit my face and knees on the gravel. At some point I put my hand out, because my wrist hurt like a bitch. Scariest part was that I couldn´t see anything for like 10-15 min. Sat on the bus the rest of the way ... read more

4 de Junio Got to Uyuni at 6 am. And it was fucking freezing. We ran and got some tea and met Steffi, a German/Londoner and got a 3 day tour with her. At 1030(bolivian time), we headed out to a train cemetery, then to a salt museum, where everything was made of salt! Then on to Salar de Uyuni, a salt flat that stretched as far as the eye could see. We went to an island full of cacti, and Justin and I wandered off and "found" some Abominatable Salt Man footprints. We stopped at a hotel made entirely of salt, had a long awaited and delicious dinner. A quick shower and bed. 5 de Junio We drove quite a bit today, saw some volcanic rocks and beautiful lakes. There were ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 3rd 2012

1 de Junio We finished our 14 hr journey, getting in at just past midnight. Apparently ALL americans must pay $135 each just to enter Bolivia, and they only take certain mints of US bills, so that was a hassle! Finally we got out ands got a cab. La Paz is a huge city nestled in a valley at 3,200 meters above sea level (about 10,000 ft). The way to our hostel involved a couple 1 way streets, which our driver just reversed up, instead of going around!! Got in and passed out. We woke up this morning with an ear splitting headache from the altitude, so we stayed in and slept all day. A guy in our hostel bought us some coca leaves (used to make cocaine, but natives here chew the leaves it for ... read more

Saturday Justin and I were majorly hungover so we stayed in nearly all day recovering. Then we took a tram ride and went to a fancy old mansion that is now a hotel called The Columns. We had some margaritas at a nearby mexican place. We raced for showers, and then met at the club downstairs, where Justin had Admiral Nelson's Blood (champagne and port, yummy!). We then went to the Red Fish Grill and had an amazing dinner (company and food were excellent). We had a single coupon to get in a fancy stripclub, so we took a photo of it and printed out one for each of us! Amazingly, they accepted that. After that, we went to a country bar and Megan and I rode a bull. Megan nearly got in a fist fight ... read more
