Today have to face the long bus trip back to Salvador, and then taxi from bus station to hotel near the airport for flight the next morning at 10 .15 back to Rio. Started off after breakfast eploring the walk to a warfall which begins near the pousada. This is one of the points it markets itself on but when I asked about it the day I arrived was told that I shouldn't do it without a guide!! In fact acording to LP there are lots of walks that you can do out of Lençois itself but none of them are signposted. I have worked out that this is to ensure that the guides make a living. Anyway surely even I cannot get lost within 15 minutes. No, I can't although I do come back a ... read more

I was picked up promptly for my trip today. There were six of us - a trio of French speakers, two of whom were living in Brazil long term and a visiting cousin. The cousin spoke little English and less Portuguese but I managed to have a chat with the other two, mainly in Portuguese. Everybody loves the fact that a tourist has made the effort to learn some Portuguese and thy are always interested to know where I learnt it - which makes all that hard work worthwhile. The other pair were Brazilians and they mainly spoke to the guides. The main agency guide spoke limited English and Portuguese. In contrast to the scenery yesterday, which was a sort of scrubland with the occasional cactus today, we were surrounded by jungle. We were not travelling ... read more

The night was a bit cooler than in Salvador, thank goodness, or at least the temperature in my room was. The terrace where they serve breakfast is lovely. I am the only one here at the moment but there was a great range of food to choose from, including toast and avocado paté made from avocados hanging on a tree right next to the terrace. Was picked up as arranged for the day trip - it turned out to be a group of 10. As predicted, a lot of people had signed up during the previous evening. They were a mixture of Brazilian, European, American and Brits. I sat next to a young multi-lingual German girl who very kindly carried my bag when we did the difficult scramble down to the waterfall and pools. I know ... read more

Had to get up at 5.45 a.m. today to catch the 6 am bus for Lençois. Wouldn't normally choose to get up at that time but, quite honestly, I was glad to see the back of Salvador although I do have to do an overnight there en-route back from Lençois to Parati. Getting this bus would also give me time to fix up a tour for the following day. Rita said she would be up in time to see me off - she normally gets up early which I was glad about, if only because she seemed to have occasional problems getting any of her sets of keys to open the door. As It turned out, she ordered another taxi for me when the one I thought I had ordered failed to appear. She also made ... read more

Seem to be spending most of my time since 'the incident' googling 'is it safe to go to X on Saturday/Sunday am/ pm ( perm any two)? The rest of the time I spend trying to work out what it is safe and not safe to take with me. Today I opted for the money belt and a water bottle, but no mobile phone, so no photos today, which is a great pity. As advised by the guide books, I also carefully calculated the amount of money to take with me on the basis that this would be just enough for my outing, about £20. I decided to go to an island which is a popular day trip or holiday retreat for Salvadorians - it's called Itaparica. I picked up a taxi to take me to ... read more

Got Rita to give my outfit the once over from a security point of view before I left the flat today. She speaks no English but is much better at miming than me. I was wearing my money belt hidden below my T-shirt and that was it! I put a small amount of money in my pocket for immediate use , no water bottle with me because I had no belt to fasten it to. She approved but after she had seen me struggling to remove her house keys a few times from my money belt suggested I needed a purse with a shoulder strap for these, which of course I have at home but didn't bring with me. I decided to give the 'pelourinho', the historic centred a miss, at least today. A friend of ... read more

If any of you thought some of my blogs were interesting, wait until you read this one which, unfortunately, is interesting for all the wrong reasons! I phoned the credit card company first thing using Viber to see why my payments were being blocked. The customer services guy I spoke to confirmed that this card had indeed been stopped and that security wanted to talk to me. Before he transferred the call he asked me what I thought of Brazil, fine, I replied I replied, until now. Yes, but what was it really like - he had always wanted to go to Brazil. Did I speak Portuguese and if so how much? I explained that without Portuguese it would be difficult to travel independently, particularly on public transport, and that even the taxi drivers appeared to ... read more

Am off to Salvador today which will involve me in retracing my steps of three days ago - 1 pm bus to Belo Horizonte bus station and then out to the airport with a flight leaving at 6.35 which I have already managed to check in for online. After my last experience am a bit nervous about whether all will go smoothly when I arrive at my accommodation. One of the problems with Airbnb is that you can only access their contact number to use in an emergency by going onto their web-site. This of course involves being online, for which I require Wi-Fi as have data roaming switched off. So one possible scenario is that you are standing outside your Airbnb accommodation with your luggage and can't make contact with your host but you then ... read more

This guesthouse has all mod cons including an iron so am able to leave for Salvador tomorrow with most of my clothes clean and ironed. Have discovered there is only cold water in the two sinks in the kitchen and in my bathroom's washbasin -the only hot water seems to be in the shower. Yet there is a water dispenser which supplies filtered water at iced and room temperature on tap. I suppose that when you are travelling and moving around a lot losing things is inevitable. Am already tired of living out of a suitcase. Did try to unpack here but it's difficult to organise so many toiletries and electronics and medication and there is beach gear that I haven't yet used. This morning I spent half an hour looking for a little bag with ... read more

How lovely not to be too warm at night - it seems a lot less sticky here and the temperature must have fallen to below 20 last night. On the other hand, the noise oi the traffic has been replaced by barking dogs. Graça appeared to provide me with coffee and breakfast. She was in a hurry to get away, although did offer to cook me a tapioca, but that's fine - really this is a guesthouse or pousada rather than an Airbnb 'proper', where you stayin somebody's house. I spent the morning doing the churches and the the two most important museums: Museu da Inconfidência and Museu Casa de Contos. Both contain important artefacts relating to what was the first uprising against the Portuguese in 1789. Led mainly by poets and intellectuals, but with some ... read more
