I am so impressed you can stand on skates at all! I have a bit of a phobia of it now. The one and only time I went iceskating was with a playscheme when I was about 8 and one of the kids with us had his finger sliced off. Yeuch. I still can't stomach the thought of it....
great pictures Jon. Sounds like you're doing ok, despite the cold and other things.. It's good that you've found a nice place; it's probably worthwhile to live more comfortably at the expense of well, more money, all things considered.. sounds like you're becoming quite savvy with the way you present yourself too, which seems wise. When are you next in good old england?
It's hard when friends leave. My friend has just left work but every so often they're replaced by a nice person. Or sometimes by an evil genius. There's a story behind that comment but unfortunately I have to surf for jobs again so will send you a message shortly explaining everything.

Just a comment from a perfect stranger... Jonathan,
I have been kicking around the idea of visiting Odessa this spring and started reading your blog to get some insight as to what I could expect.
When it comes to well thought out and obviously effortless writing, you sir, take the cake. You are truely missing your calling and wasting a tremendous talent if you don't take if farther than an obscure blog.
It's just after 10pm here in Alabama, USA and, for no other reason than your excellent writing, I've spent the last hour reading all of your entries (your desciption of a cold fall rain was exquisitely depicted).
I'm glad that you and Ana seem to be doing well and wish you both the very best.

Good on ya, mate! Thanks for bloggin' your NYE report. Little things helped. I'm destined for Kyiv, Odessa and Kherson in less than a month with almost no clue. Think it's time I found one? I'd be delighted to buy lunch or supper next month if you're willing to be found... but with such a beautiful wife as yours, I wouldn't blame you for melting into the culture there... Thanks again! Raymond (rainman@pobox.com)
wow Jon, you're a strong and brave person and I wish we had more time this holiday to sit and chat about everything. Remember that your friends are here and we'll help whenever we can.
Move over Michael Palin.... seriously, you're such a good writer. I really think you have a great future writing travel literature! I'm glad the police are doing their job and hopefully you'll feel safer soon knowing those people can't get near you anymore. The countdown to Christmas begins! It'll be nice to know you're back in the country even if work are being total fascists and not letting me have one day off between now and the 21st to come see you. Take good care and wrap up warm. Chat to you soon.
xx
Good to know that you are fine!!! Glad that you and Ana are fine and no bad surprises had happened to you. Don't you feel Cristmas yet? Are you getting a Cristmas tree?
Enjoy the weather and get more warm socks. Have a safe trip home.
Its nice to read your stories :)
I love Kiev. I spent there 5 best years in my life. Now i live in Canada, not in the best province. It feels i lost something agter leaving my dear capital.
Have fun guys at the New Year party, I wish I could come, but alas!
great Hi. this is the greatest of all your journals!!!!
really good, and hope the next one will be even better. congratulations with finding a decent apartment. Well done Ana!
You guys be happy there, you deserved it.
Have a great winter in Ukraine!
Glad to hear that you are recovering. My hope is that your naivety doesn't give way to cynicism, but instead gives birth to a sense of maturity and awareness that will allow you to both appreciate the beauty of Ukraine and endure the hardship. My time here, and my interactions with other expats living and working in Ukraine, tell me that your experience is not the norm (the only other experience I have read of that compares to yours was due to that persons reckless stupidity and over-consumption of vodka). Hopefully it will never become the norm.
I am certainly praying for you, hoping that you find a place to call your own, and that things start to truly look brighter for you!
'the estonian gambit' Be careful with this old chestnut: I once told a tramp in St P that I was from Estonia - he embraced me as a brother and attempted to start a reminiscence-swapping about the good old days in the motherland. When he suggested we switch to that poetic estonian mother tongue of ours, I fled flinging rubles at him. I guess this is unlikely to happen to you (in that any estonians who dont like estonia now work in costa coffee in london) but beware....
anyway i hope this mess all gets sorted for the better mate - natalya vasilievna sounds a capable uber-tyotka and with Bog on your side nothing can go wrong.
Unbelievable I'm really glad that both of you moved away from that place. What did doctor say (the second one)? Are you feeling better?
Is there still anything that you like about Ukraine? Are you going to settle here? If you or Ana need help with something please let me know. Does she have a job?
Take care of yourself and i hope you'll be feeling better soon!
Hi Jon,
Your Dad has kept us up-to-date with this horror story. It's sounds like a movie, it's so unbelievable. And I thought South Africa was dangerous - we have nothing on you! Glad nothing serious happened to both of you, but I believe you when you say the memory will be with for a very long time to come.
It goes without saying - take care of yourself. Make the most of it and come back in one piece ;-).
With love, Auntie Sue xxx
