i know it was probably a painful experience (I am Romanian and I know exactly what you are talking about) , but you make it sound very funny:) Let's say dark humor:) i love your story telling! It would be interesting to know if this saga will continue with ".. at my 9th visit ..." or would this be the end:)
Language This is where even a little Romanian language would be helpful! However, even that would not guarentee things to be better. The same thing happened to me. The train took off from another track and we had to wait 4 hours for the next one. Good thing though, there were 1.5 lei beers across the street from the gara!
Plagiarism Nice comment about "preaching" to the "cut and paste brigade", John. This is quite a serious problem here, which becomes outright plagiarism when the kids reach university.
Ah, Craiova Your blog brings back wonderful memories of Craiova. Those colorfully lit buildings were beautiful during the Christmas Season. Be glad you have not been traveling on "personele" trains-the ratty looking blue ones! Enjoy your time and keep writing!
You are in one of my favorite Romanian cities. Unfortunately just last week I broke my very favorite little coffee cup from there. There is a wonderful craft cooperative at the rear of the second square, and a fabulous traditional restaurant just off the main square. I'll try to find the name of it, perhaps you guys can go there.

I enjoyed reading about your meal Art Cafe. I haven't been to Croatia but hopefully soon! My blog is looking for reviews, travel photos, etc, to share. We do also do a new "food find" each week, featuring foods from around the world, and if you have any Croatian foods you'd like to suggest, our readers would love it! If you have the time, check it out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com, or email me at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com. Continued fun on your travels!
Heather :)
Pizza at Galaxy? How come you had pizza over there? I looked at the menu on line and my mouth is still watering...I'm sure their pizza is great but there were sooo many yuummy romanian dishes over there...
don't miss the park! Be sure that they take you to the park in Craiova -- its the best thing there! It has a natural lake and Romanians even jog around it! The little zoo next door might seem a little cramped, but their lions are amazingly prolific! When I was there they ran horses by outside the lions dens, and the adrenaline was flowing, it was unbelievable. Lots of baby lions.
Welcome, John! Hi John, glad you made it. Please say Hi to Peter and Julie and give Lari a big hug from me!
P.S. I still remember the delicious dinner we had when we visited some 5 years ago. Julie is a great cook!

It's meant to be Looks like it's written somewhere that you get to Romania pretty soon. My girlfriend got stranded in Bucharest for a couple of days and now, finally, UK has opened their air space and long-haul flights are getting back to normal. Thank God there's no active volcanoes in Romania :-)
Waiting the second volcanic cloud Indeed, Romania are opened airport Henry Coanda but we wait the second volcanic cloud (thursday is expected to cover Romania again).
air space is closed in most Europe, Romania included :( hi John, air space is closed in most Europe, Romania included :(
so better check this before u leave, or you'll have to travel by land and not be reimbursed for the cost of air tickets, as we've heard on the news...
check it up before and get extra money, just in case :)

I am returning to Romania for the 6th or 7th time. I have a personal affinity for Romania.
Since 2004 I have sent almost 90,000 English language books to schools and libraries in all corners of the country, most of them staffed by Peace Corps workers. Those interested in this program should contact me. Provisions are being made to accept sponsors for teachers or one-time cash donations in the US or Romania. 400 RON / $150 will send about 5 boxes of English language books to an American Peace Corps teacher there. A new batch of teachers is being trained now and will be deployed in September.... full info
