September 17, 2018 Amsterdam Today we had tickets for the Van Gogh Museum with entrance at 10 AM. After a hearty breakfast in our houseboat, it was an easy twenty-minute walk. The Museum is based on a design of architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888 to 1965). The building was completed after his death in 1973. This museum was organized in the order of Van Gogh's artistic career starting with his period of focus on painting peasants. Self-taught at this time he painted dark realistic portraits. He later moved to Paris, studied art and developed strong friendships with many contemporary post-impressionists. As time evolved he the student became the teacher to many of his peers. Picture taking was prohibited so the few photos in this blog are of reproductions. When Van Gogh died in 1890, he was on ... read more

September 16, 2018 Amsterdam Today was our first day to explore the city. After a leisurely breakfast, our destination was the Van Gogh Museum. We walked south to the “Museum Quarter”. It was a sunny Sunday and the first thing we encountered was a huge Sunday marketplace with thousands of visitors milling about. We wandered the arts and crafts aisles, then we proceeded to locate the museum ticket office. We soon discovered that this museum is very popular and on Sundays all tickets were already pre-sold on-line. We decided to try the Rijksmuseum which is about a block away. We were able to purchase Van Gogh tickets for Monday morning. The Rijksmuseum is a familiar Amsterdam landmark and possesses an unrivaled collection of Dutch art. The museum opened in 1885 to criticism, most vehemently from the ... read more

SEPTEMBER 14, 2014 Our highly anticipated day finally arrived. We spent hours getting three suitcases to weigh in at the maximum mandatory 50-pound limit and checked them in with Alaska Airlines on Friday, September 14th. (We have an extra suitcase full of dive gear). We were a bit anxious when our flight was delayed over 30 minutes. Our connection time with Iceland Air was only an hour. Our pilot shaved almost 30 minutes off our flight, but we still had to hustle to Concourse ”S” at Sea-Tac. Arriving just in time, the airline did a “courtesy” check-in of our carry-on bags. We now had five bags checked all the way to Amsterdam, pretty much everything we will need for the next 2.5 months of travel. Iceland Air proved to live up to its inexpensive rates with ... read more
