Reaching Machu Pichu turns out to be an adventure by itself From Nasca I went to Cusco and this took me fifteen hours by bus. Luckily I could sleep during the night for a couple of hours during the ride. After arriving at Cusco I met a Dutch girl who wanted to go to the same hostel as me and we shared a taxi to get there. The hostel was quite nice because it was situated in an old colonial building. It was also a nice place to meet interesting people. The town Cusco is a special place as well. With it’s churches and squares. But the main reason why this place attracts so many people is the Inca site Machu Pichu. It might even be the biggest must see place in whole South America. Comfy flight in Business class to Peru From Panama I flew to Lima in Peru. I was given a seat in the business class section. So during the flight I had a full three course meal. It was so delicious. They asked if I wanted extra peanut crumbles on my desert or some more chocolate or caramel sauce and if I wanted to eat something extra. I really enjoyed it. Nice to have such comfort for once. The seats were twice my size and I had nice company sitting next to me. It was a lady from Bolivia and she told me about her country and her business. That is buying clothes in large stocks in Panama and sell them in Bolivia. It was nice the chatting and eating and before I knew the plane arrived ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica October 20th 2009

Happy after finally receiving the right stamp Just when I was about to leave Leon in Nicaragua I met a guy from the U.S. He liked my plan of taking the local buses to Costa Rica. So he decided to join me. We had to change bus several times before we got to the border with Costa Rica. At the Nicaraguan side we got the exit stamp and on the Costa Rican side we received the stamp to enter Costa Rica, at least that is what we thought. From the border we took a bus in the direction of the town Liberia. On our way the bus was stopped and some policemen went inside to check peoples identification. When he looked in my passport he said I had to leave the bus. I had no idea ... read more

I was only for a short time back in Guatemala. From Livingston I went by boat to Rio Dulce. The beauty of the forest passed by and I enjoyed the boatride a lot. After spending one night in Rio Dulce I went back to Guatemala city to catch the international bus to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. The next day I walked into the old part of the city center. It was quite a long walk but I liked it because while walking you can see what is happening on the streets. There was a huge market covered by several streets where they sell almost everything. I bought a new shirt by the way on one of those stalls. After visiting two churches I took the bus to the ‘Museo de Arte de El ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Belize October 2nd 2009

Welcomed by lightning The day after visiting Tikal I went to Belize. In the early morning I walked to Santa Elena, a small town near Flores, and took the bus to the border of Belize. In the bus I met a girl and a guy from France. It was interesting to hear about her stories when she worked for a couple of years in Africa for an NGO. We crossed the border with Belize and had to walk for a while to get to the bus terminal. At the busterminal I bought a coffee by paying with American dollars and received the change in Belizian dollars. An easy and cheap way to change money. With my new Belizian dollars I paid the busride to San Ignacio and found very quickly a place where I wanted to ... read more

Tourist hassle From Lanquin I went to a small town Flores. This was the first time I took one of the tourist shuttles. So the busride was less interesting but surely much faster. After six or seven hours we reached the destination. But just before the busdriver stopped at an ATM nearby and said the ATM’s at Flores didn’t work. Kind of strange, especially when I saw later that the ATM’s did work. The guy that stepped in the bus said he was from the same company and wanted to drop us at a hostel and most people followed him. Of course he get’s a commission for bringing people in, but I wanted to go my own way. So I grabbed my bag from the roof of the bus and went to the place were I ... read more

Keep on moving In Quetzaltenango I met a guy from Switzerland and we walked around the city the same afternoon. One of the most interesting places was the marked. With so many stalls with food, shoes and clothes. In the evening we met two English girls and we went to an Indian restaurant. I was surprised there even was one. The food was delicious and it was fun to talk about travelling. The next day I went by bus to Huehuetenango. Every time on the bus it is so much fun to look around what’s happening and look at the beautiful landscape passing by. Besides that it feels good to travel and to be on the move, not staying a minute to long at the same place. Being joyful in a rotten place When I arrived ... read more

Flying on probably the safest day of the year. Hola! At this moment I am in Guatemala. Yes, I can hear you thinking: a new continent every week? Well it sure lookes like it. But probably I will stay for a while in Central America. In the late evening of the 10th of September I left San Fransisco and flew on the 11th of September into Guatemala City….This is the second time I hear you thinking. Flying on 11th of September in the States?? Well probably it is the safest day, because when you are a terrorist you wouldn’t plan an attack on this day, would you? I expected more security on the airport, but I didn’t notice anything different from when I arrived. At the airport I tried to find a local bus to get ... read more

Arriving in the Hood Departing on Sunday evening from Taiwan and arriving on Sunday evening at San Fransisco. Because of the time difference my Sunday was a long one. From the airport at San Fransisco I took a train to the location of my hostel. Walking through the neighbourhood made me soon realize this was one that makes you walk a pace faster. It is what you see in movies. People hanging around looking not so nice and the atmosphere was not very pretty. But well, I just walked and eventually reached the hostel, which is really good by the way. Very clean, nice people (the travellers as well as the staff), good breakfast with delicious bagels and everything very clean. Eventually I became to be a sort of thankful to stay in this neighbourhood because ... read more

The first day in Taiwan I went for a walk around Taipei and soon a question arose in my mind. Should I learn sign language or Mandarin (Chinese)? There were so many deaf people walking around because of the Deaflympics that have just started in Taipei. All kinds of different nationalities were walking around in the city. After my stroll around I took the MRT (metro) to Taipei City Hall where I visited the at this moment highest building in the world: the Taipei 101 tower. It is 508 metres tall and it is amazing to stand beside it and look up. Really a special building, not only because of it’s height but also because of it’s hightech architecture. How can we humans create something like this? I went inside to the 89 th floor were ... read more
