From the desert we headed up into the Andes, in fact about 3,400 metres up to the city of Cusco. We took the overnight bus which was a surreal experience as I fell asleep surrounded by sandy desert town aqnd woke up to the views of the misty mountains, the sheer cliff dropping off to one side of the road down to the tiny river below. It was breath taking, if not a little scary (I think I´ve mentioned before that I don´t like heights much). Just before I left England, there was a large flood in the Cusco area which damaged the Inca trail and surrounding roads and villages.
